The Scribe
Given the long tradition of both schools. The longevity of the series. The geographic proximity. And the eveness of the series, is it safe to say that the Mayfield/Paducah Tilghman rivalry is the second best in the state behind T and X? UK fball fan
T & X have a great rivalry that draws the most fans because it's in the metro area and everyone in the arera goes to see it and normally they're the top 2 teams in there class, but, it doesn't have near the history, mainly because it doesn't have near as many games to compare to it. Male/Manual would be a better comparison, imo.
katbird
Highlands vs Covington Catholic is a huge rivalry...Behind T and X I would put that game right there..It is definately the biggest rivalry in NKy..
Colonels_Wear_Blue
Based on most of your guidelines (long tradition of schools, longevity of series, geographic proximity) I'd say Manual/Male is at least the second best rivalry in the state, if not the best. It's a 118 year old series (the oldest one west of the Appalachians) between 119 and 155 year old schools, and both schools are located within 5 miles of each other. Record stands at Male 79 wins, Manual 40 wins, 6 ties. LINK

It is amazing it gets the pub it does considering those disadvantages.
Toothpick
Without doubt it is! I don't expect alot of people in NKY or Danville to get it due to being so far away and while other rivalry games are big for a time or are great rivalry games none other than Male vs Manuel can offer up what this game is. Danville - Boyle, Highlands-Cov Cath are great as well but this one seperates itself. This is a game that is 100 years old between the 3rd and 5th winningest teams in the state. Friday night will see people come back that planned their visits home around this game. There will be dads, grandads and great grandads at this game that all played in it. There are annual events like the bomb fires, bike ball, Mr. Tilghman coffin burning, the painting of the city businesses, ect................ Mayfield/Tilghman Rivalry By Lanny Lancaster The annual battle between the Blue Tornado of Paducah Tilghman and the Cardinals of Mayfield is considered the outstanding game in Western Kentucky and one of the longest and best rivalries in the state. There is and always will be a keen, sometimes bitter, rivalry between the towns of Mayfield and Paducah when it comes to their football. The Mayfield-Paducah series began in 1911, with the first game being a 0-0 tie. In 1921 the game became a Thanksgiving affair, and “Turkey Day” became the most important day of the year for the two schools. The game remained on “Turkey Day” until 1959 when the Kentucky State High School Playoffs began. The game is not played in the middle of the schools’ season but the intensity of the competition has not changed. To many, on both sides, this is still THE game of the year, and the rest of the schedule is secondary in importance. From the Mayfield–Tilghman series: *Tilghman records show the 1911 game a 0-0 TIE, Mayfield’s records show a 22-0 Mayfield victory. *Tilghman records show the 1912 game a 26-0 Tornado victory. Mayfield records show a 22-0 Cardinal victory. *In 1925 one player accounted for all five points in Mayfield’s 3-2 win. Weldon “Nappy” Yates booted a field goal and took a saftey to preserve Mayfield’s win. *Mayfield won by the most lopsided margin 85-6 in 1919. There was no game in 1920 because Paducah “suggested the teams not play since there could be no doubt as to the result”. *Tilghman’s longest winning streak is 6, Mayfield’s is 6. ___These are just a few of the early stories that got this game going, the stories just kept rolling over the years. bugatti
The 1911 and 1912 game has always been the most baffling things I have ever read.

What is the series record, notwithstanding the 11-12 disputed years? If you go by the Paducah records, Tilghman has a slight edge ... I believe it's 47-40 with 10 ties. This is the 100th anniversary of the first game, but actually the 98th meeting.
Irish Cat
A couple of other WKY rivalries of note involve Owensboro High School. They have played Henderson Co. 104 times since 1898 with the record being 67-32-5 in favor of the Red Devils. They have also played Bowling Green 70 times, first in 1915 and then not until 1932 but they have played most years since then with the Red Devils having a 39-29-2 advantage. Irish Cat
I don't think so, the website I found the information on seems to have group these schools separately, however, I cannot vouch for the accuracy of the information. Owensboro record vs. each opponent.

I don't think they've played Henderson County that many have they? If I remember there was a Henderson High School and other county schools that existed before consolidation. I don't think that counts does it? That would be like all those old Harrodsburg records still being active when Mercer plays Boyle.

Hatz
FWIW on this thread I can see a strong case for Mayfield-PT. I've heard of it even before all of this current technology and back in the 70's remember they played an important game each year for rankings and bragging.
