June 24, 201115 yr Lee was rated as one of the Expos' top prospects at a time when that system was among the best in the game. When the Expos traded Lee, Brandon Phillips and Grady Sizemore for Bartolo Colon, there were some (myself among them) that considered Lee as the best prospect in the deal. Isn't someone special... Just looked, he was ranked by baseball america as the #35 prospect in baseball that year....Pretty highly regarded, right around where Alonso was 2 years ago.
June 24, 201115 yr I don't recall Lee ever being touted as a can't miss stud when he was coming up... Weren't you about 15 back when he was traded? Did you follow the Expos then? He was rated as the 30th best prospect in baseball...
June 24, 201115 yr I wasn't talking about the raw number, I was pointing out the much larger drop in ratio for Wood. I know that pitchers usually develop slower than position players but Wood is not going to be the next Cliff Lee--he does not have that kind of stuff. He is a 4-5 starter on a good team, nothing more. What kind of stuff would that be? He doesn't over power you so it's pretty much off speed stuff and location that he has developed over time.
June 24, 201115 yr Isn't someone special... Just looked, he was ranked by baseball america as the #35 prospect in baseball that year....Pretty highly regarded, right around where Alonso was 2 years ago. I'm not touting myself as special ... just recognizing that Lee was certainly a well-regarded prospect when the deal was made. This is what Baseball America's Jim Callis wrote about Lee at the time of the trade: "The Expos added legitimate No. 1 starter Bartolo Colon but had to surrender three prime prospects to the Indians: Brandon Phillips, the best shortstop in the minors; Cliff Lee, one of the top lefthanders in the upper minors; and Grady Sizemore, a very toolsy outfielder. ... Lee, 23, was a fourth-round pick out of the University of Arkansas in 2000, when the Expos believed he was one of the top three college lefthanders available. He would have won the high Class A Florida State League ERA title with a 2.79 mark last year had a stiff shoulder not sidelined him for a month and left him 2 1/3 innings short of qualifying. Lee will show four above-average pitches at times (two- and four-seam fastballs, a slider and a curveball) and has made terrific strides with his command in 2002. In 15 starts at Double-A Harrisburg, he went 7-2, 3.23 with a 105-23 strikeout-walk ratio in 86 innings. Opponents were batting just .197 against him, and he's leading the Eastern League in whiffs. And this from Baseball Prospectus, looking back on the deal a few years later: "Baseball America was excited by Lee's potential, ranking him the third-best prospect in the Indians' stacked farm system — they'd ended up stealing most of the best of the Expos' system, adding Phillips, Lee, and Sizemore to Victor Martinez, Jeremy Guthrie, Travis Hafner, Jhonny Peralta, Ryan Church, Coco Crisp, Ben Broussard, and Josh Bard among their top 30." Obviously, Lee was highly-regarded as a prospect, and he had the numbers and credentials to back it up.
June 24, 201115 yr What kind of stuff would that be? He doesn't over power you so it's pretty much off speed stuff and location that he has developed over time. He doesn't throw 100 mph but since developing a cut fastball to go with his 2-seam, 4-seam fastball, his curve and slider he's been great. Look as his strikeouts per 9 innings, WHIP and HRs allowed (especially given his numbers in Texas and Philly's bandbox parks). He's been dominant.
June 25, 201115 yr Volquez couldn't get through 5 innings. The offense has battled back to tie it at 4 at the end of 6 though. Nice to have Lecure back. It would be really nice to get a W here.

Obviously, Lee was highly-regarded as a prospect, and he had the numbers and credentials to back it up. Being that you're an age of the prospect guy for position players at age 23 Wood was in the majors for a majority of the year. I would guess he was a top 30 prospect at some point last year the age of 23. I'm not saying he'll be as good as Lee. I am willing to bet the Mets won't do better picking 35th or so in the draft. He's still young.
June 25, 201115 yr The ump got that call right, but they blew a big call at the plate earlier. I'm dumbfounded that anyone wouldn't want expanded replay. It makes zero sense.
June 25, 201115 yr Paralyp just said Gomes likes the ball middle/out to get his arms extended. He's smokin' crack.
