Track The NL Central Champion Reds (Week 13)

Featured Replies

So then the question is, would the Reds be willing to put together a Wood, Grandal, Cozart package?
No way Walt makes that deal.

For what Reyes?

Not necessarily for Reyes, but for someone that can make them an instant contender. This team as currently constructed can't win in the way they need to in order to keep the core intact. They need to add a dynamic piece.

If Mesoraco is as good as everyone is making him out to be, does Grandal have much value for the Reds though?

I don't see the Reds trading Wood. I don't think they would want Lecure as their rotation fill in in case of an injury. And does that really help the Reds win a title this year ... trading away your only left handed starter? So, no, I don't see the Reds making that deal. I do think they would be open to trading Grandal since they have Mesoraco in front of him and Hanigan is still under control for a couple of more years. I doubt the Reds are open to trading Cozart either. Not with their current SS position and knowing there is zero chance they could keep Reyes after this year.

No, I don't have a problem with trading him at all.

The Reds are what they are, and what they will continue to be. They need to develop the young guys for a 3 year stint in the majors, then like Votto they'll move on to greener pastures. They'll stockpile the minors with prospects but be reluctant to deal them for top shelf rentals because they know that the constitution of this team will always be young guys just starting their careers in the bigs. Or at least that's what it looks like from here. So, I'd be just as shocked to wake up one morning with an afro as to see a deal like any being proposed in this thread come to pass.

They'll offer guys just like they did Bruce. But the premium players that pass thru here will likely move on, ala Votto.

So what's the point in having a team if you have no chance of winning? What incentive do the fans have to continue to pay money to watch them play, if they're not trying to win big?

Are they in the cellar? Are they above .500? If the pitching returns healthy do they have a better than average shot at the division? Jeez, one season with a division crown and we forget how long the Reds were mired in mediocrity. So, we concoct all sorts of trade scenarios.

Yes, they have a shot at the Central, but they have the core in place to be so much more than that. You're right they were terrible forever, but these next couple years they have the best shot they've had since 1990 to win big, and they seem content to just try to make the postseason, not win while there.

Horst back to AAA and Chapman is back up with the club.

Let me ask this: If the Reds win the division this season. Maybe even take the next step in the playoffs, do we really believe that they're gonna really LOOSEN up those purse strings? Would winning at that rate not be enough to keep the fans interested and coming to the stadium? Some of this sounds as if we're not making deals for FA we just aren't trying hard enough and some of us are just gonna say forget it.

Payroll went up combined 7 Mil last few years. I have no reason to believe they wont keep adding little by little as long as they are making money. If you build it they will come.

If they win the division again this season, nothing will change. The attendence will stay right where it is and two years from now Votto will be gone, as well as others most likely. They have to take that next step or everything will go back to where it was in the 90s and 00s IMO.

Exactly. But in order for an increase in payroll, attendence has to increase. That isn't going to happen if no progess is made IMO.

Another divisional crown would be progress. If you don't look at it in that way, where does the progress stop? You don't see back to back divisional titles as progress? Yankees with the payroll over the moon haven't been any better in the post season of late. They've won one WS in 12 years.
