I look for the Colonels to have a very good year. However, I think had the past 2 years had this year's schedule you would have had 8-2 or 7-3 type records in the regular season. I think the Beechwood and Highlands games will be the key games in this year schedule. I am not overlooking anyone of the 1st 4, but by week 5 and 6 you have a pretty good indication of what type of team you are.

 

In Ky. High School football you can start out slow, and improve week after week and you still have legitimate shot at making post season noise. (See SK from 2009) If the Colonels can be 4-2 or 5 -1 heading into the bye week, with no ugly losses it could be a special year in Park Hills.

 

As Clyde said the key will be the defense and specifically the run defense. If they improve significantly in that area of the game, they will have a very good year.

I hope Bir has a great year and beats Highlands!

Imo it's simple. If the D is strong they can make a run. If not it will be a good but not great season.

To offer something concrete, I was at the Cov Cath Alumni Social a few months back where Coach Ray spoke. He spoke very personally about his experiences at Cov Cath, about his past dealings with the football team, and about the current state of affairs with the team. Coach Hovan, Coach Fangman, Coach Groneck, Coach Roedig, and Doc Breuggs were also present. To paraphrase Coach Ray, he said that:

 

-Although he is always excited about football at Cov Cath, he is more excited about this year's team and about the upcoming 2011 season than he has been in any past season that comes to mind.

-2006 season aside, Cov Cath has had trouble living up to their tradition of excellence in the last decade. 2011 WILL present quite a change.

-Cov Cath's schedule for this year creates more opportunity for the team to excel and build on their talents instead of trying to fight 2 or 3 or 4 out-of-state powerhouse teams as they had in years past.

-The O-line will make or break the offense this year. There is enough talent in the quarterback, receivers and running backs to expect a LOT of scoring out of the offense as long as the line steps it up with them.

I'm not sure about Mitch. I hope so because he was really good at punting last year - one of the better punters I saw last year in NKY.

 

I would guess that they will have the same kicker as the last two years.

 

LB corp should be better as they're a year older. Heck, we had one LB play 90% of the playoff game against JC even though he played frosh ball all year. So he'll be back and should be good. DJ Powell should be better as a junior.

Watched Mitch practice at CovCath on his own a couple of times when the baseball team was practicing on the turf due to a wet baseball field. He told me that he is feeling great and at least to me, looked fine. Now he wasn't kicking the ball as he was prior to getting hurt but he told me he will by the time practice starts in July.

What will they do with Dressman? He's a good QB but he won't be taking any reps away from Bir. With his size and athleticism he should be playing somewhere.

He won't be moved out of the quarterback position, but I wouldn't be surprised to see him running some receiving routes or possibly in the defensive backfield this year.

Dressman is a sophomore, right? I would say if he starts as a sophomore at WR or DB it means one of two things - either he is a top tier level talent OR there are some issues with team depth. My point is how often does a sophomore start on the varsity at CCH? In your top programs at the 3A level and up, sophomores shouldn't be starting varsity IMO unless they are just that good. You work reps in for the good sophomores where they won't hurt you but you do your best not to start them.

I agree about cornerback. The relative lack of cornerbacks was a sore spot last year, and with his athleticism, I wouldn't be surprised at all to see them move Dressman back that way (reminiscent of Tommy Beechem way back when). ...although...we may even see him play some outside linebacker.
