Too Fat to Fly?

Featured Replies

I also hate to fly but it's more because I'm afraid of crashing.

Worst flight I ever had was to Vegas. I was in the window seat and had a lady in her 60/70's next to me. Every 30 mins or so she would get out the worst smelling cheese and slices of apples to eat. I swear it smelled like she threw up on herself.

She was just trying to stay regular man... I also have a slight fear of flying, maybe that's why I like it though, after I reach my destination I feel proud of myself for not whimping out.

I have to agree that I hate being next to a passenger overflowing hin his/her seat into mine, however, how can this possibly be enforced?

A mock seat for passengers to fit themselves into similar to the the box for carry on luggage?

If someone is too big and there are no extra seats, then what?

Who polices this and would you want to have that job?

The hospital that I work at orders only extra wide wheelchairs because of the obesity problem. That way, every person will fit. Maybe the airlines could make their seats a little wider.

Why should the airline be forced to lose money just in case? The seats are X wide. When you buy a ticket online you are told "if you are wider then X you must buy 2 seats. If you do not buy two seats and you show up to board and are wider then X and there are no extra seats you don't get on.

What about a tall person at a sporting event? The people behind can't see. Should they have to buy their seat and the seat behind them?

Sit in the last row. :D

The issue I have is there is literally no end to the ways that this could be extended. It starts with fat people, then tall people, then it's crying babies....

Frankly, flying is horrible in my opinion. I hate it with a passion. I'll drive anywhere before flying.

One of the most horrible trips I have ever taken was to Utah. I was in the middle seat of the middle row on a jumbo. The guy to the left of me whips out his newspaper, and proceeds to read it opened up like he was at home on his sofa. The guy on the right of me sets up his lap tray and every surface around him as an in-flight work area. Neither were fat or especially tall. But it was THE MOST MISERABLE flight of my life!

Flying is uncomfortable for all, inconvenient for most, and only tolerable because of the speed of transport.

You obviously aren't drinking enough during the flight.

I think that's just a common courtesy thing. I dunno, if someone has a problem with a nearby passenger/fan/etc I think they should first take it up with them and then the establishment they're at if it's require.

I'm not gonna lie I for some reason like flying, I just feel like I traveled thru space when I arrive some where a few hours later and the weather is totally different and the time or atmosphere has completely changed. Gosh I'm ready to book a trip right now.

I am the same way. I love flying. I have flown at least 100 times and will fly to go anywhere whenever I can afford it.

Being a large person myself, I agree with needing to buy 2 seats if you can't buckle your seat belt. I do think you should get refunded 1 seat if the plane is not full. I don't like to be touching someone as much as they don't want to be touched.

On a side note, I can understand why someone would think charge obese more for health insurance but that is a slippery slope. It starts with the smokers, then the obese, where do we draw a line. I think we should charge more for people with allergies, or people who play risky sports. I don't know. I think the whole health care system needs fixed anyway. I was unemployed for a year and my kids had better and cheaper insurance than they do now when I have a good job. I guess that is more a political conversation.

How fat is too fat? When you make the person next to you uncomfortable. The overweight person knows this before they ever sit down.

A few years ago when visting friends in Florida we went to a Rays' game. An overweight person sat down next to my wife and forced her to lean towards me, as he invaded her space, making her uncomfortable in a couple of different ways.

The gentleman, with his friends, realized the situation and was kind enough to move to some empty seats without being asked. Of course that would rarely work on a plane.

How smelly is too smelly to fly? I have been on some flights with some nasty people.

Ha I've only flown a hand full of times, probably why I still get nervous but I still love it. Sounds dumb almost old school like a kid back in the day riding the train with their dad to a baseball game but I feel important when I fly lol. I don't think about where any one else is going just me and my plans. Probably helps that I've only ever flown for vacation/fun trips.

Thank you. I've flown a handful of times in my life -- none since 9-11, mercifully -- and I still hate thinking about it. I still cringe thinking about my flight experiences. Those few times I have flown required lots of booze.

I fly a lot. I get on the planes first and make sure the arms rests are down. I don't want any big person "oozing" into my area that I paid for. I do not recline my seat because I think it is rude and do not like it when the person in front of me does. If they do I tend to make sure I search for something in the back pocket of their seat right about the time they are falling asleep. :DOne of the rudest things I have seen is women applying nail polish! :madman: Rockmom, your middle seat to Utah is a walk in the park. Come talk to me when you book your aisle seat 3 months in advance and the brain trusts from Delta switch planes without telling you and give you a middle seat in coach on a 16 hour flight to Hong Kong.:isurrender:

In all honesty I have tried to conjure up a reason as to why someone would not be required to purchase another ticket if their size (either genetically or of their own choices) or physical state requires them to do so. I cannot come up with one. Airlines are not non-profit organizations. Most make little to no money and the way they do make money is by selling tickets, not by occupying space on a flight.

Absolutely they should have to buy two seats. My personal space shouldn't be allowed to be violated because Joe Schmo doesn't have the self control to put down the extra piece of pizza or walk away from the buffet.
