If you knew for a fact someone was illegal, would you report it??

I suppose so. But how would I know for a fact? I can't imagine a circumstance where that would be something someone here illegally would share with me.

Cool beans... My faith in you is restored.. :D

Libertarian Democrat. Strong supporter of getting the heck out of Iraq and Afghanistan. Strong supporter of reducing the federal deficit. Don't care what you read, think, pray, watch, drink, or smoke in the privacy of your home. Don't care who you marry. Wish Obama felt likewise.

Sorry...I was at work, with limited time to post. PP92 nailed it, as far as what I mean. When I meet immigrants, which I do on a daily basis because of the number we hire where I work, it simply never occurs to me to wonder about the legality of their status. I look at them and treat them as I do any other new people we hire...without wondering what they have in their past. That's all I meant.

That makes sense.

Exactly! Well...except 2 things....are they X or T fans? Or are they UK or UL fans. :D

I had actually typed "Trinity or X fans" when I realized that there was an example that was even more extreme.:D

It is a testament to my unwavering faith in my fellow man that I, when meeting someone new, do not immediately start wondering if said someone new is imbued with such a fundamental character flaw.

What else can I do? I am an optimist. I always hope for the best.

Fair enough. I actually consider myself an optimist in many areas. However, government efficiency is not really one of those areas.

I completely understand why you have that feeling. I have always felt that real change will come in the next 5-10 years when more people from my generation assume positions of leadership. My generation has seemed to be more tolerant and levelheaded than our previous generations.

I personally would not for sure. I operate with a "none of my business" look on life.

What if he took your job??
What if he took your job??

If they took my job and I knew for a fact they were illegal then my HR Department is in a whole heap of trouble. Would I tell on the illegals individually? No. Would I lawyer up and sue my corporation and HR Department for wrongful termination as well as hiring illegal immigrants to replace me? Absolutely. If we want to seriously attempt to stop illegals then companies need to be held responsible when they are giving them jobs. Especially if Americans are losing jobs in the process.

Agreed..

In most cases I probably still wouldn't. If it's an attempt to get much cheaper labor then I would consider the approach PP92 discusses. My job requires a higher education, skill level, and a knowledge of a complex database---these aren't the types of jobs where you typically find illegals employed so the question is rather moot.

BUT, attitudes like the one your question presents are most of the time just a scare tactic...

But what criminal behavior would I report? That they didn't clean the tub well enough, or deliver the spoon with the room service order? As far as I'm concerned, they're just my co-workers. If their documentation passes the scrutiny of our HR department, then why should I wonder?

I can tell you, from experience, that even if someone's documentation passes your HR department's scrutiny, if they are found out to be illegal, you are still held liable for employing or holding a contract for work with them. Furthermore, you're not allowed to come out and ask "Are you illegal?" - that's an illegal interview question; you can only tell them that they "are to provide you with legal work documentation".

Off topic....I recently was on the interview committe at work and I was amazed at some of the questions considered illegal questions. Amazed both ways. Amazed at what I couldn't ask and why. Some questions seemed like valid questions while others were utterly ridiculous questions. It is a tremendous balancing act to find employees that you need for your job without crossing the line. HR departments need to be on their toes and properly trained or they could wind up in a lot of trouble rather easily. Just wanted to share that.
