That may not be word for word, but that is the basic message.

 

In no way shape or form am I comparing the Football coaching position at ND with the basketball position at CovCath. I am just trying to show that a large candidate pool, is not really important if you believe in what you have to offer. No doubt that their are unique challenges that come with coaching at CovCath, just as there would be with coaching at Highlands, Holmes... or any other school where there are high expectations.

 

Thanks to Coach L for stepping up and being the guy for so many years. Coach L is a great person and is a great representative of CovCath, and what it embodies as an instituion.

Brossart is loaded with talent in the lower classes and have a chance for a couple of trips to Rupp over the next couple of years. Got a pretty good gig there with an excellent support staff. Just don't see this one happening.

 

Code's also a para-professional at Brossart, and supposedly CovCath is looking for an in-house teacher/coach. If that is truly a steadfast requirement, the field narrows to a couple of local diocesan head or assistant coaches, or an outside the system teacher? If outside the diocesan system, my guess is the candidate probably would have to be fairly young; as most older teacher/coaches probably would have built tenure in another system, and $$'s/retirement would be a big issue. If they don't stay "in-diocesan", I'm thinking they may drop the in-house teacher requirement?? I'm sure Principal Rowe is getting some interest from a wide variety of options; and suspect the pool of candidates is larger than many expect?

I can't even use the word "spin" to describe these statements, because it is so far beyond spin. Hope everyone put their boots on before reading that.

 

The real truth is that because of the requirement that Cov. Cath. does not want a para professional and the fact that the pay at a private school is less than that at a public school, the pool of candidates willing to accept the job is very very limited. So limited that for many really good coaches those factors offset the many benefits such as: having the talent flow through the program to always be competitive, great feeder system, all male school that draws from all of Kenton and Boone Counties, high socioeconomic demographic of the students, community support, etc. Expectations and the unique challenges that may exist do little to nothing to scare away the best candidates from Cov. Cath. Low pay and having to teach at the school more likely have a greater impact.

 

If I had to guess who the next Cov. Cath coach will be, I would think the next coach might be similar to both Eviston and Brannen at NCC. Young guys who are alums of the school and whose passion and loyalty might outweigh other factors. A guy like a Nestheide.

I'm coming in kind of late so sorry if this has already been mentioned but from what I'm told Rick Schumate really wants this job and will apply for the position. He is a CCH alum and honestly, this has always been his "dream job."

Shumate would be a great hire at CCH. AS an alum he understands everything that goes on outside the court at CCH and I think he has the personality to deal with it. Good fit and good timing as I think he has done about as much as he can with the Beechwood program.

Rick wouldn't be worried about the paycut.

 

He has been talking about wanting this job for a couple years now. Not publicly because he loves his kids and where he's at now, but CCH is one job he wouldn't pass on.

 

His style with the type of players the Colonels have could lead to a lot of success.

Highly doubtful since we have had 2 in the last 50 yrs. I think the Colonels have some very nice young talent in the upcoming 10th and 11th grades as well as a few solid Sr's coming back in Massie, Cleves and Hayden. They have the talent to compete but until someone formulates a lineup and they play some games its all up in the air. Shumate would be a great fit.

OK. Just making sure we're keeping things in perspective.

I Like Shumate and I think it could be a great match but I also like Dawn, Faust and Code as well. I am sure that CovCath Principal Mr. Rowe will make an outstanding choice like he did with hiring Mr. Dave Wirth and I have faith that Mr. Rowe will choose who is best for CovCath.

 

Anyone who thinks that they can come in and win a 9th Region Title just because CovCath is suppose to be loaded, is just plain nuts.

 

In the years after Mote won five straight Ninth Region Titles CovCath didn't win another Ninth Region Title until Mr. Tieman did the trick in 92.

Yes having an outstanding Coach does make a difference, even if you have the talent.
