Maybe some teams are just getting tired of losing, after a while it gets old. I guess we just have to try harder. I didn't start the thread.

I'm not surprised at all that Trinity is playing the schedule they have coming up. With the players they have returning from last year and others that could be coming on, they should be able to make a solid run at it.

Some good points... when I saw their schedule the first thing that jumped out to me is: with the current crop of players at Trinity the THS coaching staff has decided to take the next step and put together a regional schedule in order rise to the level of a regional football power. It did not occur to me that the schedule was put together (with so many out of state teams) out of necessity, but that does make sense.

 

Anyway, whatever the cause(s) of Trinity's schedule, if the Shamrocks are able to do well against that kind of competition, they will surely get a lot more attention nationally (and deservedly so)!

 

I must admit, I haven't exactly been a Trinity fan, but it's hard not to be very impressed with what the program has accomplished and where they seem to be headed. For the first time ever, I think I'm gonna actually root for THS when they play against those out-of-state teams.

 

PS to Trinity fans: I still hope Highlands wipes the field with you guys in the scrimmage this year! And yes, I know it's "only a preseason scrimmage" but still...

RM hit it. We had to schedule out of state. Some local coaches talk the talk about building a champion, but when they had the chance they dropped us like a hot potato. You build a champion by playing the toughest competition you can find.

Hoosier, I am a coach, not football, but why are you judging me if I was one, you don't know me, you have no right. Are you from Jefferson County? Does your school play the Rocks, and have they played them in the last 20/10 years/ Do you understand the concept of the Private school/Public schools debate? I do, so I'll wait for your reply. I was told several years by someone after My son's Male (public school) team lost to the Rocks as time ran out, it was heart breaking for us, but the better team won, "I was told we need to try harder". Male also has lost every time since then.

 

I saw almost every practice my son went thru for four years, "need to try harder" was a very degracefull comment and it hurt me when to think we didn't give all we could in that game and season, I just use the phrase as a "joke" so I'll again wait for your reply.

Obviously not hbf, but if you were a coach of a 6A team in Ky and you weren't scheduling Trinity because of the public/private issue or because you felt you could not beat Trinity, then I'd judge you even if I didn't know you. You are a very religious person and believe mightily in the word of the Bible for which I commend you. That is a judgment I have of you even though I don't know you.

 

I just don't think any team will improve enough to beat Trinity without playing them regularly. I could be wrong about that, but I don't think I am. This will anger you, but I also don't think that kids and coaches at every program work just as hard as kids and coaches at every other program. I'll acknowledge that for some programs there are valid reasons for that not happening. Some kids at rural schools can't get to summer practices as easily or at all because of the lack of transportation. Some kids in urban schools don't receive the parental support needed to push them to attend every practice. Some kids have to work summer jobs in order to help support the family, which causes them to miss practices and work outs. Some coaches have young kids and working spouses, which means they can't be in the coaching office almost every moment they are not teaching. Some coaches have very "understanding" spouses; some have not so "understanding" spouses and families.

 

There are many very valid reasons why some kids and some coaches don't work as hard as others. But at the end of the day, it happens that some kids and coaches don't work as hard on football as others. It's true not only in high school football but it's true in every other activity on this earth. I'll never forget a situation that happened to me when I was a young associate in a law firm. A mentoring partner of mine told me that if I wanted to be as successful as one of the senior partners of my firm, I had to be committed to the practice as he was. Pretty gutsy of me (or more likely stupid) when I responded "No thanks. The guy's wife left him because he was never at home and his kids were a mess because he never spent any time with them. That's not how I want my life to turn out". My point was clear: I had different priorities. He no doubt was a more successful lawyer than I was or am because he was more committed to it than I was. I never begrudged him for making more money than I did or having more power and influence in the firm than I did. And I certainly never claimed that I worked just as hard as he did, because I did not. Making huge amounts of money and having a lot of power simply was not my priority. It was his. Thus, when analyzing some standards used to judge success as a lawyer, he was no doubt more successful than I was/am.

 

With some kids and coaches, the priorities involving football are different than kids and coaches at other schools. I'm fine with that because winning football championships is not necessarily a top goal of a lot of kids growing up. What I'm not fine with is the thinking that kids and coaches at Trinity may not be more committed to winning in football than kids and coaches elsewhere; I'm not fine with the thinking that every kid at every program works just as hard as those at other programs. Some may, but some do not. And with football being the quintessential team sport, unless there are 40 plus players showing up at every conditioning session and at every practice, being totally dedicated and working all out at every one of those sessions and practices, that team simply will not beat the team that has that occurring.

 

Bless you, you are obviously committed to the Bible and study it a lot. I've got zero problem admitting that you are more committed to the Good Book than I am. Knowing scripture is a huge priority of your's. It is not a high priority of mine. You thus know it much better than I do. I know how to read; I know how to think. I could learn scripture just as well as you do. But to you it's a much greater priority than it is for me. Thus I have no problem saying you are better at knowing and understanding scripture because you work at knowing it and understanding scripture much harder than I do.

 

Not every person works as hard as every other person to know and understand scripture and those that work harder at it know it better; not every lawyer works as hard as every other lawyer to be a successful lawyer and those that work harder at it are more successful; and not every player and coach works as hard as other players and coaches to win state championships and those that work harder win more state championships.

So , you are a coach , that is wonderful. Do you tell your players that you don't want to play a certain team because you will lose to them ? What would your players think of your reasoning , do you think they would try harder or do you think they would lay down because they would lose anyway , my thought is the latter.

 

As far as the " public " and "private " debate , I didn't mention either one in my post . I didn't mention Jefferson County in my post .

 

Why would you think " you have to try harder " is a disgrace ? If that was the case , I would try harder , not tell my team that we " will not schedule that team " because we will lose anyway.

 

My team is Highlands and no they don't play Trinity in the regular season but they do scrimmage.

 

I may be guilty of judging you , and yes I don't know you , all I need to say if you were my coach that I wouldn't play for you. I don't believe in throwing in the towel before the fight even starts .

 

One more example , Ryle has been playing Highlands for several years and most recently twice a year. Yea they lost every time , until last year , when they beat Highlands. It may have been the biggest win in school history . They would not have won that game if they had your mind set of " we won't schedule them because we lose to them every time ".

To some schools, coaches, parents, and players, working as hard as Highlands and Trinity do year-round is unfathomable and they will never beat them, but they will continue to make excuses.

Talk to me when you walk in my shoes, other wise your comments are not valid. Highlands???? Oh, I'm just not sure how to end this Highlands???? WOW!

Also I coached a 8th grade soccer team, we had kids miss games due to grades , we had 6 against Noe Middle school the class of our county, we were down 8-0 at the half, my played goalie in the second and shut them out, 6 against 21 kids. They didn't play on the defensive side the whole game.

 

We could have walked before the game...like I said you don't know me.

I hope the Rocks do really well against this schedule. I'm afraid though, that my barometer is probably different than most. I feel that respectable games, hard fought and well-played, even if lost, will be success. It's a really tough schedule to play these teams week in and week out. I feel it may be unreasonable to expect an undefeated season. Not to say it shouldn't be the goal, but I (personally) wont be disappointed if we suffer a few defeats. I believe though, that it will skew the opinions of many people who follow for curiosity's sake. I also feel there's a contingent out there who will delight in any Trinity losses that may result. The one thing I do know is that regardless of the W-L at the end of the season, if this is to be the Trinity football schedule of the future (or similar), we have no where to go but up, and playing this kind of regional schedule will only attract even more football playing students.
