Deaton Resigns as Dayton Head coach

Featured Replies

My son's friends from Bellevue said that the word on the street is Chad Montgomery has accepted the job. Not very familiar with Chad other than he has been up there for a few years and played at Bellevue. If this is indeed the case, is this a good hire?

???? Thought the Russ guy was still the coach out there... Never saw anything on that situation, so its interesting to hear that comment.. These small schools are stirring some pretty good stories lately.. I agree with what somebody said earlier, tough job to take and get ready for a healthy dose of 5-5 in a good year..

Hello he was saying Chad was FROM Bellevue and has taken the Dayton job. If this is true first thing to do is go clean house get rid of everyone and start over with all new asst coachs. At Daytin it reminds me of the Reds just get rid of one head coach and keep the rest of the old staff and see what happens. Clean house and then go down to the youth program and clean house there too. If not it will be the same old thing every year. JMO

First thing that I do is contact Ridder and pick his brain for every bit of advice that I can. He was the one Dayton coach who got every ounce of energy from his kids, no matter what their record.

If it is true that there wasn't a single win in the entire program from pee-wee's to Varsity, then I would agree with cleaning house and starting fresh.

My bad, was reading that on my phone and must have mixed up the message.. I would relatively agree with cleaning house in this case, sounds to me like nobody was that happy with anything that was going on in Dayton. Might not be a bad idea for the admin. to sell a whole new group of people to the students and their parents. Hope this Montgomery guy is ready for a challenge, Dayton needs some major work to become competitive again..

That is probably the best advice. Knowing Ridder during my time as a student, from playing for him, and knowing how he was the few years after graduating, he knew how to get the best out of everyone on the field and in academics. He was also very big on being disciplinary and was never bashful about it to say in the least, which went a long way. Ridder, as well as others on the football coaching staff during his time played a big role on shaping many students.

There are 3 very qualified guys on the staff. I dont agree will getting rid of the staff. They are told to coach a certain way that the head coach desinates. The jv team was very competitive coached by montgomery, walls, and watson. The young kids played hard and disclplined for those coaches. The senior division was also coached by Deaton's bro. There is a lack of quality players in the system. But with right guy, (montogomery,) this could change.

ask anyone who attended the jv/freshmen games and they could tell you there was a huge difference in heart and passion from the kids led by the assistant coaches. Also, the 3wks the coach was suspended things we more serious and the team played hard. Ultimately, due to injuries, the talent was very, very thin. Lost 2 starting o'lineman in the first 3wks, at a small school this is a killer. There are kids walking the hall and on the team that did not buy into deaton. Dont know why becasue he was a great person.

Is it confirmed thaty Chad Montgomery got the job?

What about former Dayton player Jesse Herbst? Isnt he the Defensive Coordinator at SK and hasnt he been out there quite sometime. Is he ready to move to a head coaching position? He kind of reminds me of a Brian Weinrich at Highlands.

He would be great for that program but the powers to be there passed him over once for a short timer. Just wish they do it right and clean house from the starters division to all the asst. coaches on the high school team. Get a clean fresh start and get them back to playing football. Watched them play a game this year and if they had two o-lineman hurt shame on them for not moving that big kid from the backfield who couldnt get out of his way to the line.

I would hate to see Herbst leave SK, he's a very fiery character.

Yes he is; he always has been from what I can remember during my younger years even.

There are a couple of assistants on the varsity team that are good and one of them was an assistant when I played while Ridder was coach. Smitty and Chenot are great guys and have probably been the only bright spots of that team and school since Lickert left. Smitty was an assistant when I played and Chenot was on the team as a player at that time.

Well they did play at Campbellsville together under the Great Coaching of Ron Finley!
