There are several issues with the athletic director, as well as with administration from what I've been hearing from many over the past few weeks. Many things need to be addressed in Dayton, and unforutnately it's much more than just from a sports perspective.

You are right mexitucky, it's still sad to see happen, especially when it was the school you attended and when things were much better from administrative, leadership, and sports perspectives. I definitely do not put the complete blame of the football problems on Deaton. I'm perfectly aware that he punched out a window on a bus, but you have to really think about all of the contributing problems to what caused that, which I also do not believe has to do with the players/students.

I think it was long overdue had no control of his team. Now they need to Get Rid Of their A.D Scott Meyers he has No clue what the hell he doing. IMO

I don't know much about Coach Deaton, but I can tell you that Dayton is VERY lucky to have Mr. Meyers in their system. He is unquestionably an honest, intelligent, talented guy who CANNOT work miracles given some of the circumstances faced by the teachers and coaches in the school system. One thing I do know is that Mr. Meyers will do everything in his power to get things back on the right track down there. Truth be told, you may just get what you wish for because I assure you Mr. Meyers would have many oppurtunites If he ever decided to leave. Careful what you wish for. I know him well and he is just stubborn and tough enough to get the job done in spite of the obstacles. If you let him.

Great post Mexitucky! I went to a couple of Dayton games this year and was very disappointed with the support that was showed for the team. I saw the same faces you have seen for years down there volunteering their time, Mike Case, Danny Ilg, coach Donelan and a couple others, doing whatever it took for the love of the kids. The kids feel entitled down there. It's a shame, Dayton can be such a tight knit community that sticks together. They just have not had the passion in Dayton for some time?

Not sure where the original poster got his information, but Deaton was not fired nor approached by the school to step down. From talking to Deaton last weekend he decided to step down on his own accord to pursue other opportunities. I normally am just a lurker on this site but it really bothered me that this was so inaccurately posted. As a Dayton fan and alumni I wish the best for Deaton and hope good things for the Greendevil program in the future.

I'm not saying anything about Deaton, b/c I don't know him and I don't know the AD. However, Dayton's program and community surrounding the program needs to look itself in the face. I don't know how any coach can win when you don't know what players will show up for practice and which won't. It is impossible to win when the first negative play sends a team into a tail spin. Until the community and the team, (and I feel truly sorry for those players who gave their all), dedicate themselves to uniting positively, this will be the result. The program is already playing against a stacked deck due to the numbers game. You can't have internal discord as well.

 

I agree wholeheartedly. The point you raise is often overlooked by many. he community and the parents have to demand that these young men who play the game stay and finish what they start.

I have never met Coach Deaton, but did have the opportunity to coach against his brother (atleast I am pretty sure thats who he was). Was very appreciative that I scheduled a game against him even though thier MS team wasn't in our league. Seemed like a really nice guy and from what I have seen over the years apples dont fall far from trees. Which would leave me to believe Deaton is probably an okay guy who was in the wrong place at the wrong time.. Some coaches have a tough time not only dealing with losing but dealing with overwhelming adversity. Thats what this sounds like, pressure from administration to win, pressure from the community, and pressure especially from the players who seem to have a chip on thier shoulder and think they are better than 0-10... No team is better than they really are (THEY ARE WHO WE THOUGHT THEY WERE)... I posted before that Dayton is a fledgling program right now and if they dont continue thier own MS program it will continue to spiral downwards.. I recently read an article on Pete Carroll and one of things he said is it makes a coaching job impossible when the players won't buy into what your selling. (Carroll after following Parcells at NE).. It sounds to me like the players werent buying what Deaton was selling, which is okay, but you cant completely blame the coach.. Any great coach will always take the blame for a loss, but great players rally around thier coach and play twice as hard so their leader doesn't have to deal with that. I always hate to see a coach leave in dire circumstances such as this but thats the profession and if you cant bounce back from it then you dont need to be in it.. Hopefully Dayton will right this ship and put some stock into thier next head coach and help sell him to the kids because it sounds like they are some TOUGH customers...

Right, because Dayton was riding so high before Scott Meyers was hired? You obviously have personal motivation for your statement. The football team was in shambles when Mr. Meyers arrived.

 

Dayton has a smart, trustworthy man at the helms of their athletic department. Hopefully, they are smart enough to realize that.

Dayton is just another one of them places that, don't get it in the community, school, home, administration, all the way up and down, expect these coaches to overcome crazy odds, crazy parents, crazy hours, for peanut pay. Take out 20-25 schools in the state the rest are all dumps. I just hope if and when I got kids football as I knew it is still around.

Sounds to me like you didnt go to one of those 20-25 schools.. THEM PLACES? GOT KIDS? Those places, and have kids.. Come on bro, dont hate on schools if you sound like you didnt graduate from one.. Not a single coach (except NFL) coaches for the money... Dayton obviously "gets it" b/c they have been successful in the past, 1A schools are always going to have ups and downs (very high ups and very low downs) depends on the talent they are lucky enough to keep.. Minus three or four schools in 1A, this is the every year struggle...

I think they where 9-3 in football. Basketball still playin ok. Trust Me this guy is not right for this job. If he was that good Newport wouldn't have kicked him out

BTW. He did do a good job of keping drinks out of the gym during games. The A.D that is.

I Love football and I love kids, and know in the state of Kentucky no one really makes money from coaching I am fine with that, but the way people treat these men who coach is unbelievable, its really a shame. I do know there are some bad coaches who deserve the ridicule, but most of them don't and are constantly hung out to dry. Its just a shame.

Where are the coaches that were there when they "got it"???????? Long gone, does that not tell us something?
