With all this said...does anyone think Highlands will run in to another team in the 5A playoffs as good as Ryle?

 

What if Towles doesn't drop the ball before getting in for he 2 pt conversion and Highlands goes on to come back and win...are we still pondering this question?

 

What does this mean?

I actually think the loss is a good thing, but the whole physch think is understandable.

 

You never know how kids, especially high school kids are going to respond to an emotional let down.

 

There is no emotional letdown with these players (or coaches). They don't need to be reminded of what didn't go right during the Ryle game. They understand ifs and buts, and there were a lot of things and plays that could have happened the other night, but didn't. They came up short. These guys are gamers and are pretty tough on themselves about what they coulda, shoulda, woulda done in the game. On the other hand, they talk it over, and they don't place blame on each other. The team has moved on. Will they win state? I don't know, but they have been giving it 110% effort all year. These are 16 and 17 year old young men. They practiced hard yesterday and were out with their friends last night, some enjoying being able to take in other high school football games. They don't get on blog sites at 11 pm on a Friday night and blow smoke at each other about how bad their team is. On the other hand, they do read this stuff. The quote I heard from several of them the other night, was they accept criticism from their coaches, and from parents and friends over wings and cold beverages. They don't know who the nameless people are who post criticisms on this website, but they have a field day and a lot of laughs attempting to associate your name with interesting characteristics and mannerisms. They play Sherlock Holmes and know some of you. They practice daily. Instead of blogging Monday afternoon, stop by and introduce yourselves and tell them face to face that they fumbled the two point conversion that could have tied the game! And while you're at it, ask them if they think they are going to win state. Then tell them how much you know about the other good teams in class 5A. Then ask them what they know about them.

 

Are they the clear favorite to win state? The answer I heard from some them was they will let you know around 7 pm on December 4. Then sometime the following week they are heading to BW3s in Cold Spring. They also mentioned that they will treat anyone that wears a name tag to free wings.

Well, let's look at what happened following Highlands' last two losses before getting beat by Ryle...

 

Highlands was eliminated by CovCath in the 2006 playoffs and then went 15-0 the following season, and then won the first game of the 2008 season before losing at Cincy Colerain. So, HHS won 16 straight games following the 2006 CovCath playoff defeat (the game was at CCH).

 

In the second game of the 2008 season Highlands lost at Cincy Colerain and then rattled off 13 straight wins to close the 2008 season, followed by a perfect 15-0 season in 2009 and a 9-0 mark in 2010 before losing to Ryle, for a grand total of 37 straight wins up until the Ryle game.

 

So, I'd say Highlands has a pretty good record of "getting back on track" following a loss, wouldn't you say?!?!

Without seeing Johnson Central or Bowling Green this season I will have to say Highlands is the clear cut favorite. However, I know JC has a ton returning and also a running back that resembles Elliot.

 

If they get the 4peat it will likely be the toughest one earned IMO. Hopefully they heal up this week and finish with #20.

 

If there are any JC or BG fans out there I would be interested in hearing about them and how they are looking this season.

Wow you are funny..They only lost to Trinity by 2pts because Trnity had to play their 4TH STRING QB..If you are playing against someones 4th string qb and don't win what does that say about your team??? It cracks me up when BG fans say "we only lost to Trinity by 2 pts". To be honest BG won't even make it to the finals to get beat by Highlands again..haha!!

Having seen Jude this season, I can tell you there are some similarities, and a few key differences.

 

I believe Jude is the faster of the two, and is able to get to the outside quicker than Elliott. Elliott is a more "powerful" runner, and does well up the middle. Jude's quickness through the hole gets him the yards, versus running over people in traffic.

 

What impressed me most about Jude is that even though he isn't a big running back, he doesn't go down easy. Arm tackling will not work, and there were times when a single tackler had a good hold on him and he got away for significant yardage. Simply put, he isn't down until the whistle blows.

 

Another factor to consider about these two running backs is the O Line blocking for them. Ryle's O Line came a long way since the beginning of the season, and played a good game Thursday night. While Johnson Central's line is big, I don't think they have the quickness that Ryle's has.

John Hardin will be the team to beat in the west. They will play at home all the way through the playoffs.

A rematch of 2009 would be nice to see.

I think that people may not be giving the injury status of highlands LB'ers enough thought. If i'm correct they have lost one LB for the year and another is banged up. I haven't heard how serious his injury is but you absolutely can't take their two starting LB'ers away throughout the playoffs and still think they can stand up to the type of running games they are going to see. I'm not saying that they won't still outscore whomever they play but you have to acknowledge that Highlands may get allot more yards against them then they are used to if they don't get the one starter back and have someone really step up. Being a Lawrence County and Johnson Central fan I can speak from experience and say that the Highlands coaches have historically put together offenses that will score 50, 60 or even 70+ (BAD MEMORIES FROM 99!!!!) when they need to. I feel like this loss absolutely gives some teams like Johnson Central a little more confidence that it CAN be done. I can see the coaches from their playoff opponents playing the clip from Rocky 4 where the corner man says "he's cut! he is man, he's not a machine!" (it's something like that)

 

With all that being said. I think the playoff run may take on a different look this year, but I believe that if you want to wear the kings crown you have to take it off his head and noone in 5A has done that yet.

Highlands remains the favorite in 5A until a 5A team can show they can beat them. Period. A loss to a very good 6A team means nothing in the 5A playoffs, since Ryle won't be making an appearance there.

 

That said - Bowling Green and John Hardin both appear as reasonable threats... and the gap may have closed, whether due to injury or a smaller gap in talent, it doesn't matter.

I am going to say that this is a wakeup call for the Bluebirds.

John Hardin is on track to return to State, but watchout for Warren Central. Chritian County ended the season w/two powerhouse schools to have them ready also for a championship run. Defending champion Highlands is clear favorite, 5A playoffs well watching.

Its amazing to read all of the posts with all the comments about the loss to Ryle when its 9 win regular season with a record that most any other school would be happy that it was a very good year . Let us fans all not forget that the ultimate goal at the beginning of the season is to get to the playoffs and win a state championship, not just going undefeated. The history of the 2010 bluebirds will be remembered only if they win the state championship not that they lost to Ryle.
