What's the best concert you've ever been to?

Featured Replies

I think for me, this one's between 5 shows...

Bob Dylan at the Xavier University Cintas Center in 2001 on his Love & Theft tour. First time seeing Dylan. Amazing. I sat across the aisle from a grandfather, his son, and his granddaughter all singing along to Like A Rolling Stone. Three generations of a family all singing along to the guy's music...and he was playing it live nonetheless.

Ben Harper at the Taft Theatre in Cincinnati in 2000. Great crowd, great music, great live interpretations. Music went from folk to funk to hard rock.

Radiohead at the Blossom Music Center in Cuyohoga Falls on their Amnesiac tour in 2001. Beta Band was opening for them. Beta Band was even well worth the price of admission. I'd been waiting to see Radiohead live for 6 years at that point, and the show exceeded expectations.

Bon Iver at the Southgate House in Newport in 2008. The show was only 3 weeks after the album was nationally released, and Bon Iver (and Justin Vernon) were still unheard of. I'd never heard of Bon Iver, but I went on the good word of a friend and was absolutely mind-blown by the performance.

The Flaming Lips at the Lifestyle Community Pavilion in Columbus, September 2009. First time seeing the Lips. I was about 15 feet from the stage, and everything that their shows are famous for happened. I even got to help hold up Wayne in his giant hamster ball. It was fantastic.

There are some other notables, but those are to top 5. No doubt.

I was very impressed with Flaming Lips' show this summer at Forecastle. Also got a real cool photo of Wayne in the ball with nothing but a sea of hands holding him up. Very cool.

I would say the best concert I have ever been to was the Kiss/Aerosmith Concert. I was in the 2nd row middle stage and it was unreal. Pretty cool!!

Jethro Tull,Rupp,1978

Rush,Rupp,Hemisphere's tour

Dixie Dregs,MSU,79ish

Foghat (saw them 4 times in 70's..never a bad show).

KISS at Freedom Hall on the makeup reunion tour in '96

North Mississippi All-Stars at Southgate House a few years ago

Any one of the numerous V-Roys shows at Southgate House

I saw Wilco on back-to-back nights at TallStacks in Cincy then at Iroquois Amphitheatre about 5 years ago on the "Ghost Is Born" tour, and it was incredible, and much better than the earlier times I had seen them.

Pearl Jam at Lollapallooza and on the "Yield" tour was outstanding

Saw Steve Earle play about a 4-hour show at the old 321 Performance Hall in Nashville that was amazing.

I'm sure there are a few I'm missing.

Tough one. I saw Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers with the Drive-by Truckers this summer and it was every bit as awesome as I thought it would be. I saw the North Mississippi Allstars during a snowstorm in Philadelphia last year. There was a smaller turnout due to the snow scare, so I had my choice of spots. They played for almost three hours and my jaw was on the floor for nearly all of it. After the show they came out and mingled with the crowd despite everyone being hurried out of the venue because of the weather. I have a nice 11x17 of Luther Dickinson wailing hanging on my wall from that show. Bonnaroo was one to tell the grandkids about, but that's because you could see about 20 artists a day if you wanted.

The Dismemberment Plan at the Southgate House in Newport during their farewell tour, sometime in the summer of 2003. Unreal.

Gruesome Twosome Concert (Rob Zombie / Alice Cooper)

Rod Zombie just this past year was the best I've ever been to (John 5 on guitar, Joey Jordison on drums and Piggy D bass). The concert had everything from pyros to lasers to robots and even a 10 foot tall dancing robot , he really emptied his whole bag of tricks.

Also Alice Cooper didn't hold anything back , It was awesome.

Goose Creek Symphony at Goose on the Lake the last two years. They've been together forever and really put on a show, especially there. The after party that goes on is pretty cool too, you'll see members of Goose still up by the fire at 6 a.m. picking with various members from all the bands there.

Justin Townes Earle/Jessica Lea Mayfield a few weeks back at Headliners. It was the night after the Radio, Radio incident and right before rehab. I've seen him multiple times but the emotion he showed and his demeanor that night made it a very good one. Also Jessica Lea Mayfield BLEW me away. Can't wait to see her again.

Ryan Adams at The Palace a couple of years ago. It was one of his last few shows before his "retirement" and he was actual interactive with the crowd and played several encores. I heard his show at the Ryman the night before was even more amazing and later found out that I had a free ticket waiting on me for it. Either way, it was an excellent show.

Wanda Jackson at Goose on the Lake last year. Man, I had no clue what to expect from Wanda and had never heard her music before. She came out and flat out rocked for two hours...great show and hell with her energy level and voice you'd have never realized she was completely exhausted.

I'm sure there are more I'm forgetting but those are the first few that come to mind. A couple of local favorite I always like are The Ladybirds and Johnny Berry, neither have disappointed me when I've went to see them.

Wilco at Tallstacks was a fantastic show. It would've been number 6 on my list if I had listed it.

Rancid/Rise Against was one heck of a concert.
