October 28, 201015 yr Holmes may have lost McClendon to Holy Cross (don't know about that) but he was not their best player. They had a set of post players that carried that team. Without the big boys they would not have been nearly as successful. His older brother definitely went. I'm assuming the younger did as well.

I'm not too connected with the younger guys in Holmes' program.

I reffed their 7th grade semi's last year and remember two good-size kids with one being pretty nimble/athletic. However, you never know if they're finished growing. The kid I mentioned might be one of those early developers.
October 28, 201015 yr Their names are Jason and Kenny, not sure of their last names though. Kenny can get up. They both played on my sons AAU team, with 5 of the Ockerman kids and 5 Gray kids.

Jason Covington and Kenny Potter, both 8th graders at Holmes Middle. Markel McClendon, not the brother of Christian, is now attending Holy Cross. Markel played on the Holmes Middle School 7th Grade Team as a 6th Grader during the 2009-2010 season. Very good point guard!
October 28, 201015 yr If you feel this way about Basketball then let's do it for Football also. Take the best 22 players and play in the Middle School league. What would Dale say?
October 29, 201015 yr If you feel this way about Basketball then let's do it for Football also. Take the best 22 players and play in the Middle School league. What would Dale say? I am all for it. The problem is those that are not in the 22 best players will not be happy with being left off and players number 18, 19, 20, 21 and 22 would probably not be happy with their playing time or lack there of. Comparing apples and oranges here my friend because there are no organized basketball leagues for the youth of Fort Thomas to hone their skills in. If kids are going to develop in basketball, it is going to take a parent and/or parents to get a group of kids together and play in competitive/AAU leagues at an early age. Those kids have such an advantage over those that have cut their teeth in the Dayton and/or Newport rec leagues. Ask Qryche and Bird Bath their opinions on this matter.
October 29, 201015 yr http://www.nkmsaa.com/basketball This is the site for the middle school league for Northern Kentucky - Boone, Kenton, Campbell. Also, Grant Co MS and Pendleton MS. There are some private schools in this as well, but not all of them. . . Last year anyone could look at the schedules and standings, but right now it seems to be password protected. Not sure what's up with that . . .

Look at the rosters on the HMS squad. In basketball many of the boys that play significant minutes play AAU.Q will have the next strong group coming in. As far as football, I have no problem playing our top 22 in middle school league and developing others in junior football. Honestly, parents need to step up and coach and work with their kids early instead of crying about injustices now.
October 31, 201015 yr Turkey Foot Middle school will have a 7th grade boys tournament December 20th-22nd 8th grade boys 27th-29th new school new gym should be a nice tournament..

Honestly, parents need to step up and coach and work with their kids early instead of crying about injustices now. I learned 6 yrs ago when my sophomore son was playing on a weak team in the Dayton league and getting maybe 2 qtrs of playing time and one practice a week that you have to get your own team, practice twice a week atleast and play around 7 kids for everyone to be happy. I am referring to having a grade school team and then if you can find a good AAU team where you might have 8-10 kids then you will get more competetive practices (which is where the kids get better, not in games) and the game speed is much faster. I have a nice group of 4th graders right now that all go to Johnson in Ft. Thomas. We have 6-7 kids that I have coached the past 3 yrs and we emphasize fundamentals and playing as a team. They are very competetive and love playing the game. I told them the other day that in 2 yrs you they will have to compete for a slot on the 6th grade team where they likely will only keep 12 kids. This means that of those 6-7 there may be a couple that get cut. In my honest opinion if they stay with myself and the other two coaches and keep working hard, all 7 of them will make the team but you never know with politics, etc. Bottom line is you have to get your group and work hard to find competetive leagues and develop your kids on your own in Ft. Thomas. We are playing out at Nothing But Net this winter and doing some tournaments. Competetive basketball isnt for everyone. In fact I had to tell a couple parents of kids on my team last year that they would probably be better suited for the Moyer League. I was honest with them and didnt want their child to be overmatched and it created some hard feelings. It comes with coaching, it stinks but you have to be honest with parents. In Middle school its ashame they cant get quality coaches and its a darn shame that Kevin Nieporte stepped down as 7th grade coach at HMS because he is a dandy and he really knows how to motivate kids. I wish the best of luck to all the coaches up there and hope they keep developing those kids.
