Middle School Basketball

Highlands 7th grade could be extremely good but two factors could cause problems..............

Choice of coach is very odd indeed........................Not exactly a guy that inspires confidence

Do they have to keep too many players again this year (12-15) or will they only keep those that can play (like 10 players)

Silver Grove has a tip-off tourney that runs beginning Nov. 05. I know they have all age divisions ranging from 3/4 grade to the 8th grade.

And on a side note their 8th grade team will be comprised of all 8th graders except for maybe 1 or 2 7th graders, which is highley unusual for them due to how small a school it is. Very talented 8th grade class for the Big Trains....................

I think 15 is a good number for any basketball team. That number gives you room to work around kids getting hurt, bad grades, or being sick. If you only keep 10 and one gets hurt and one is sick now you only have 8.

15 is way to many. 3 or 4 of those kids will never sniff the floor..I think 12 is a good number for a school team..

15??????????????? I have no idea what experience you have but you cannot possibly have a good situation with 15 kids. 10-12 is better.................but if you have 15 you have problems............especially with parents....................Especially with Ft. Thomas parents..................................:D

15 is a good number if we are playing rec basketball and the won/loss record does not matter because we are interested in making sure that everyone gets playing time. No way possible to keep 15 players/parents happy during the course of an entire season. 12 max and 10 min would be ideal if you really want to be competitive with the other schools in Northern Kentucky.

Thanks alot! We are in this one!

Turkey Foot Middle School will have a boys 7th & 8th grade tournment this year at the Christmas break..Details to come later

Will i guest your right! 10-12 kids if you are only wanting to win and be competive in Northern Kentucky. But don't you think 6,7 &8th graders should learn the game so they can make your High School programs better? Football teams take everyone and all those kids don't play. but a few years into it those not so good kids become good.

If you have enough kids, a school should have an A & B team and set both up for success. For example, Camels A team will be playing in the NKMSBL and the B team will be playing in a less competitive league.

I believe middle schools should have two leagues, one competitive and one for development. It's not fair to either side to lump them together imo. It hurts both sides of the equation and upsets parents. Would that please everybody? Probably not, since you can't please all of the people all of the time. It's very difficult to spread 120 minutes of playing time with 15 players.

When is it that the best players play? 6th? 9th? No offense to any kids at all. Not all will play high school basketball. What are your thoughts?

By this age, kids should know how to play the game and they will make the high school team better by being able to use those skills to the fullest. Also, if you want kids to learn the game in 6, 7 and/or 8 grade then you need to have people coach those teams that can teach the kids those little intricacies of the game. There are 10 or so kids on the 7th grade team and near that many on the 8th grade team that know the game well and now it is time to represent your school and Play to Win.

Could not agree more with this statement, however you have to have the necessary number of coaches in order to get this done and that seems to be a big problem at some schools.

Exactly the point of my post.
