Could This Be the Last Year Boyle & Danville Play Football?

Featured Replies

Interview with Boyle's Principal is bringing up an interesting notion:

http://www.amnews.com/stories/2010/09/27/spo.595896.sto

Question: Was this the last Danville-Boyle County football game?

Begley: “There has been discussion brought to my attention about that. Where it started, I am not sure. At this point, on September 24, it is way too early to make that decision.

“There are some hurt feelings on both sides of the fence, and I can see both sides of it, over the situation of a transfer student (Will Dunn being ruled ineligible to play at Boyle after transferring from Danville in January). If that is the reason, then that will not be the reason that we do not play.

“We are going to have a bowl game next year. Will that impact the schedule we have and mess with our schedule? It could, but I don’t know. That will be (athletics director) Chris LeMonds, (superintendent) Mike Lafavers, (football coach) Larry French and myself sitting at a table and saying where we want to go.

“I can personally say I think playing is the best thing for the community, but that is my opinion, and my opinion could change because I don’t know all the ins and outs. It is a tough question for me to answer accurately.”

Later in the article there is discussion of Boyle hosting a new Bowl Game next year that "might" be at the same time as Danville's Classic.

Interesting talk in Admiral-Rebel land.

My hope is that the series does not end between the two. If it were going to end it maybe should have from around '87 to '93 but it didn't then, so it should not now. (Of course both were in the same District in those days and the series could not end then. :D)

I don't care about the Bowl Game stuff but I want the series to continue. It's been uninterrupted since 1965. Don't throw away 45 years of rivalry now. :thumb:

I hope it doesn't end. Obviously Boyle County is ahead of Danville right now, but I wouldn't say it's light years. Boyle County has proven themselves a great program for over a decade, but they are one bad hire from dropping down in stature, as was evident a few years ago. If the series ends, then it will be next to impossible to ever revive it. As long as it isn't 60-0 on a regular basis then I say these two should play.

My thoughts exactly. :thumb:

It was like 63-14 a few years in the late 80's. Ed Rall's last winning team ('86 7-3) was still thumped by Keith Morgan & Jimmy Baughman to the tune of 40-3. I tried to say that I think relations are strained over recent events before last week's game but few on here seemed to want to approach that notion. Well it sounds to me that Vaught and Begley are saying in not too subtle terms that they are more strained than some fans are willing to admit. :walk:

I assume the value of the bowl game is it brings a lot of money in for the program? Is there something else of value in a bowl game?

I hope they can get past any bad feelings and keep playing.

A Bowl Game is about money. The bigger the names and game, the more fans in the stands, the more money you make.

I hope that the Boyle County/Danville game continues along with a bowl game on the schedule. Boyle County does need to have a bowl game and it will definitely benefit the program. Dropping their biggest rival does not benefit the program. Also, it sounds like the dropping of the Boyle County/Danville game is more one-sided, in favor of Danville. Am I wrong to assume that?

I would hate to see this end. We have been on the end were a rivalry has ended in our county and I don't know if it will ever get back.

I don't know what is going on with this situation, but who ever has their feelings hurt needs to get over it, ending this rivalry that has gone on since 1965 over one incident is totaly ridiculous. For me that goes for both sides, whoever it is, don't get mad and take your ball and go home with your lip stuck out.:irked:

Plus, Bell Co. lost the Corbin series, which imo has hurt Corbin tremendously.

I agree with you. I hate to see those rivalries lost. IMO don't let this get away either.

Keep it going. Rivalries like this are good for Ky High School football.

:thumb:They sure are.

They should continue to play. No matter what.

Here comes PurplePride92 without local feelings whatsoever and true feelings for a true rivalry with Bell County or LexCath.

*******True story*******

I am currently in Japan and a friend of mine who works at Corning with me is here also. He is a Mercer County fan. We met at the local Japanese watering hole and the first thing he says to me is "did you see where Boyle and Danville may not play each other anymore?" I laughed, slugged my adult beverage down and said......"Good!!!!" I hope we are done with them. That's what they get." You see......in about 5-10 years Boyle County and Danville will become one school that will play in 5A or 6A. It's a matter of time people. Wrap your heads around to it and let it sink in. It is going to happen at some point and this is the first step. Boyle County would be STUPID.....yes STUPID to turn away the bowl games with Trinity and St. X to appease Sam Harp/Danville. Period. The time has come to do what is right for the PROGRAM at Boyle County and if that means stepping on Sam Harp...I mean Danville's toes.......then so be it. Boyle County doesn't have any hurt feelings over Will Dunn.....Danville does. Will Dunn showed up at Boyle County's doorstep and he was welcomed in. Hopefully the right thing will be done before the season ends and young Will will be allowed to suit up AT LEAST ONCE IN BLACK AND GOLD. I say have the bowl game at Boyle County next year....sink the Pigskin Classic....move on....so be it. If it costs Boyle County a regular season game against a crosstown foe then so what. No sweat off of my back. Sam Harp ran away from Boyle County at the rec league level, the freshman level and the jv level and that is the truth. I'll be here all week(and anytime for that matter) to stand by that statement for anyone who wants to take it further.

The Danville/Boyle County rivalry may be done. And good riddance. Who really looks like the coward after losing 12 of the last 15 matchups and getting dusted the last 3 years?

Answer that one.

Forget diplomacy..........I'm tired of dancing around.......LexCath and Bell County are ready to be rivals......especially if they both go to different classes next year. New day.......new age. A Boyle County victory over Danville is no longer needed to validate the season. Who needs them?
