If SK was 5A they would still be the same team, the players that live in Kenton County and want to play for the Neers would still go there to play. I don't see a big difference in enrollment numbers affecting the product put on the gridiron as far as 5A to 6A goes because not long ago all the teams more than likely would have been in 4A together anyways. Lower Enrollments do have an affect on programs but with open enrollment your going to go where you want to anyways if you have a preference and that's how Kenton Co is set up. Also as far as Highlands goes they have an advantage that few High School teams have and that's regardless of how low there enrollment is there still going to be very good and they will be playing even weaker competition come playoff time. Lets say Highlands is even Lower than 5A there's no difference as far as the strength of their team because they get players from other teams in NKY, regions all across the state and players from all across the country to play for them as well as the players that grew up in Fort Thomas. The difference is HHS would have this melting pot of players from everywhere who are going there because of their rich tradition(which nobody can deny even SK fan or whatever his name is) only there now playing against lower enrollment school who can only choose from the players that live in their district and don't get transfers. You Birdies have an advantage that few teams have and that is you will be a consistent powerhouse with few down years. I'm not arguing HHS power, I'm just justifying a team that's on the rise and I believe that's my Neers. I've enjoyed this topic, I hope the Bluebirds bring another Championship back to NKY!!!

 

My argument was that if SK went down a class they would likely have less players or less quality players because there would be less to choose from. But if SK played with their 6a size team in 5a, then they would have an advantage. People want to play for Highlands for exposure and to play for a championship caliber team. I think this topic has been milked dry, I don't think that SK will be a contender in 4 years and you do. There is not much gray area.

Since the original question posted by the Guru was "Is SK dead in the water?", i will attempt to contribute something positive to this thread, as you requested. Theoretically SK has potential to reach the State semis and face T or X. But as 95% of all posters have said that "No 6A school" can compete with T and X, isn't everyone "dead in the water"? I think this statement is close to being true but because of schools like Nelson Co winning the 4A state championship and Dixie knocking off T a few years back, public schools have to have hope that they can be the next David.

 

Since Football has been relevant in the state of Kentucky, Highlands/Cov Cath and BG have dominated 3A to 5A (with a couple other schools sparsely competing for the title and excluding Boyle Co.) and St. X and T has dominated 4A to 6A (with 3 public schools winning since 1991, i think). So, by the numbers....every team not previously mentioned is "dead in the water". But that is why they play the game! SK is moving in the right direction but it is ludacris to think that they will duplicate the 2008-2009 run and ever match Highlands tradition. Miles Simpson is gone and he is never coming back. The only school that will bring Highlands downward to SK's and NKY's level is Covington Catholic, for they are their biggest competition within their class. If you were to rank the best schools in NKY over the past 10 years, SK would not even break the top 6 or 7. Without writing an essay, lol, SK is not "dead in the water" but please don't act surprised if they sink...and sink fast.

I'm convinced uk#1 isn't a real poster but some kind of plant from a rival school trying to stir things up; or maybe it is Guru stirring the BGP pot. Kidding aside, I know the humble fans like Neerfan and me, who have been watching SK football for decades, remember the single A schools on the schedule just so they could eek out a homecoming win. (No offense to single A schools but these weren’t the best single A schools.) There were several years where those homecoming nights would represent the Neers only win. Conversely, SK must have felt special as they were scheduled as everyone else's homecoming games.

 

We (the fans who have been around for the lean years) are thrilled with the recent success and hope that the trend continues. Last year's team was more than Miles and there are several kids from last year's class that are missed, especially Hansel, Piccorilo and Brown, just to name a couple. This year's team isn't on the level of the last few years but it also wouldn't surprise me if they get on a run by the end of the year.

 

To answer Guru's question, I don't consider them dead in the water but at this point, they would have to be considered the dog when compared to Ryle. Winning state for a 6A team other than X or Trin is going to be a tall order, but anything could happen. Is it possible for SK to win state this year? Probably not likely but then again I guess there is another movie in there for Bulldog if the miraculous happens. In the meantime, uk#1fan, come out from your real alias of being a Colonel, Bird or Eagle? By the way, the one night where you claimed to be on the sideline wearing UK and Bengals garb, I didn’t see you at the game. Hmmmmm

I remember when I played, ever game was a homecoming game. No wonder we came out flat in the 2nd half, those halftimes were brutally long. During my Jr and Sr seasons we won four games, two against Dayton and one against Conner and Scott. I think the program has solid footing and I don't see why they can't compete for a district title every year but this thing is still in it's early stages. The enrollment is growing and the program has drawn some interest in Independence, we are no longer a doormat. Coach Marksberry is a great head man for the program, he's made Friday nights relevant and that's a very good thing. Only time will tell, I'm not foolish enough think we can't falter but I'm confident we have a good thing going.

I have seen many seasons of SK losing they was my favorite team then and they are now I graduated in 1993 from SK I am not a plant from a rival school I do like to stir the pot though.

We will find out how good Ryle really is in 3 weeks.

Probably 2 wins in the playoffs would be there cap...Depending on how their Oline improves they could go further though

SK is 3-1 and has yet to play there best football maybe when they are 6-1 people will start giving them the respect they deserve!
