Seriously, the keys for CovCath will 1) tackling; and 2) establishing the running game. If they can do those, they can win. During the Cooper scrimmage, they tackled better as the scrimmage wore on. They never really seemed to try to show off the run game too much.

Later in the year I might not say "prohibitive."

At Nippert and playing 6A Ryle will be a tough beginning for young Mr. Bir in his first high school varsity football game but I believe that Ryle is lucky to be playing CovCath and Mr. Bir so early in the season!

 

As Blake gets more and more playing time under his belt, his level of play will improve and with the running game CovCath has this season, the passing game will garner big yardage when he and his teammates get on the same page. Look for a 70/30 running early in the season but by mid season look for a more even 50/50 mix.

 

BTW I am really looking forward to watching both the CovCath JV and Freshmen teams play this season, as both the JV and Freshmen are going to be something very special this year and in the future!

I think CovCath will shut down Ryle's offense.

 

I like (but do not share) your optimism about the Colonel defense. Ryle should win comfortably. I agree with the observation made by several posters that if the game were played later in the year the result would be much closer.

Ryle did not have a "Nicholas" playing for them????

I look for a game plagued with penalties and mistakes. It's week 0. Both of these teams will be hitting stride in October, but I think it will be a sloppy game for both teams as they try to get on pace for the season ahead. I would be surprised to see a lopsided affair. I give the edge to Ryle due to their leadership at the QB and RB positions. Elliott is a freak. The CCH boys better bring their killer mentality, because I know Elliott will bring his.

Covington Catholic Colonel Varsity Football vs. Ryle Raiders - In the Season Opener, live from Nippert Stadium

 

Note: The game could start a little later as the CovCath vs. Ryle match-up is the second game of the day at Nippert with Dixie vs. NCC being the first.

 

 

Don't know much about CovCath as I have not seen them or heard much about them. I expect both teams to be better than last year. Hopefully, the bad half vs. Dixie is out of their system and the Raiders are ready to play with intensity for 4 qrs. Lookin' forward to Friday night lights at Nippert.

I look for Ryle to win this one comfortably after getting off to a quick start against the Colonels.

 

A few keys to this game I feel are:

The start - I think CCH needs to get off to a good start against the Raiders or else they could be in for an uphill battle all night. Both teams will be fired up to begin the season, however, I believe with the inexperience at QB for the Colonels, if they get behind early panic could set in. Whereas, if Ryle falls behind early, I feel with their experience at QB/RB they'll be able to battle back and put up points against the Colonels.

 

QB's - I would think you have to give a BIG edge to Hempel over Bir making his first varsity start.

 

RB's - I would have to give the edge to Elliott as well.

 

I look for Ryle to be able to run against CCH with Elliott which will open up the passing game for Hempel to allow him to throw the ball all around the field. Of course, I'm not familiar with Cov. Cath. defense so this may all be for not, however, after seeing Elliott and Hempel on the practice field and during the scrimmage, I'm thinking both are going to be in for a very big year for the Raiders.

 

Prediction:

Ryle - 33

Cov. Cath. - 13
