For those who do "hate" Highlands (as ridiculous as that is) it's about nothing more than the winning.

No, it isn't...as i said above. You can't blame the institution for having an appeal in the community. You can blame the institution if members of said institution deliberately draw families in. I think it is very common for families to move into Ft. Thomas when their kids are little. Highlands is a great school academically. It is also common for families to move to Ft. Thomas when their boy is in 9th grade, which may be athletically motivated but is legit. But we also know kids have an athletically motivated move to Ft. Thomas once school HS starts...the year the mitchell ruling took place, they had 3. No one ever speaks of nevels...But to answer the question of the original thread, I am going to say no. They may go 26-1 however...not to my liking.

Somebody else said it elsewhere-I believe Voice of Reason-and I agree with him that if you want to say you have a top team in the country then for crying out loud schedule some tougher competition. I have already been through this with Leatherneck and he PM'd me and I totally respect his viewpoint, but c'mon-honestly the Bluebirds wouldn't be in the top 3 in Greater Cincinnati much less nationally. That is the kind of talk that drives me crazy. Don't excuse Highlands size if you want to be a nationally ranked team-then it is incumbent to take on all comers. Either stop the nonsense on the national rankings or play a MUCH MORE DIFFICULT LOCAL SCHEDULE!!!

 

If they were in the GCL they would finish above LaSalle every year in 4th place and no higher more often than not.

I understand what you are saying when you dont think Highlands should be ranked that high, but the goal of the season is to be ranked # 1 in the final poll, and thats all teams can do because there is not a national playoff. You can argue what teams should be ranked all you want but the truth is that Highlands was ranked #3 in the final USA Today poll. Whether anyone thinks they deserved it or not, Highlands did finish #3. Theoretically, a couple more losses and Highlands would have been national champs. There is no reason to change the schedule if the schedule already works. Highlands needs to do whatever they need to earn the voters respect and not do more work than they have to. Looking at the final ranking of last year, I dont think Highlands needs to change a thing. For example in the NCAA basketball tourney, you hope your team gets in an easy region so you can make it out without losing. You also hope that the other good teams in the tournament get upset before they get to you. But in the end whether you had a hard or an easy road, the champion is the champion. I mean look at Butler and Duke. Niether of those teams would be considered a a favorite to win it even though duke was a 1 seed. Highlands finished #3 and no one can take that away from them. I respect your opinion but I dont agree with it. Highlands goal is to be national champions and they were really close and that is a fact. I just dont see a reason to change.

 

I honestly do get your point and thats probably why Highlands got passed by Abeline, Texas in the final week of the poll. Because they played a tougher opponent.

I agree. You think Highlands needs to prove themselves more and I think the schedule is fine because of the final ranking. I see both sides of it.

If the courts ruled in Highlands favor then I think that the KHSAA should have no choice but to give back the wins. One would think that if the KHSAA did not return the wins Highlands could take the KHSAA to court again and probabley get the court to rule in their favor. Of course that would make the KHSAA hold a grudge against Highlands and they would make up for it at some other point in time I am sure.

My argument is one that I like Highlands very much, but this latest introduction of being a NATIONALLY ranked team makes me laugh. Some of the most ardent Bluebird supporters do not believe that Highalnds is, was, or ever will be the #3 team in the nation. thenamerobdigity and I have come to a thoughtful conclusion where he thinks Highlands basically plays a decent schedule-doesn't lose and positions themselves further and further up the national rankings as other teams lose, and I say fair enough to him.

 

My belief is that if Highlands really wants folks to believe they are a NATIONAL power they need to schedule WAY UP with local and state powers to prove they are the best around here. For national rankings it doesn't matter how many kids you have in your school or on your team as it is football. Just a good lively discussion and other posters and I have come to a peaceful conclusion; however, I am always glad to be enlightened by others thoughtful responses.
