I thought Holmes played very well today against Highlands. They still have work on the offensive side of the ball; but the defense made plays. Of course that is without line play. They made some nice stops and ran well with the receivers. HHS still made plays but this is not the Holmes teams from years past. IMO a team to watch this year...

My take on todays 7 on 7. HHS played the defense that they will play when there are 11 opponents on the field. They stayed in the coverage and covered the area that they are supposed to when there will be 11 guys. Holmes elected to play a 7 on 7 defense, where they guarded the 4 HHS receivers where ever they went with all 7 guys chasing after them. The weak side and middle of the field were open on every play, a swing play to a back would be TD every time. In a real game, opponents will score lots of points. Not being critical of Holmes, this is how they elect to play 7 on 7, there are no rules saying one can't do this. Just stating that HHS just needs to move on and consider this a nice day of football.

I think that is a fair assessment. Occasionally they did have LB stay on the line to represent a stunt; but the middle of the field was open and TE drag to the weakside would have scored quite a few times. Also very seldom would you see so many in coverage with the a good running game. I do think Holmes is turning the corner and will sneak up on a few this year.

Interesting but not new. I've seen other defenses do the same thing in 7s competitions over the years. Not often, but it's not the first time.

 

We also have to remember that in 7s competition, the defense knows it's going to be a pass every time. The LBs and DBs can sit back on their heels and never worry about first reading if there is a run play called. That's a huge advantage to the D. While the offense has the advantage of not worrying about a pass rush to deal with, I'd guess that after multiple 7s under a defense's belt, the defense has a bigger advantage. That's just not Holmes defense; that's all defenses (which may be part of the reason why Holmes O looked like it still has some work to be done).

 

The best part of all of this is that the 7s are over and we will soon be dealing with the real deal. I can't wait for the Trinity scrimmage and then the first regular season game. Oh where as the summer gone.

I believe CovCath played Moeller yesterday. I think today the 4 teams scheduled are CovCath, Chaminade, Lakota West and Conner.

 

Are you sure? I thought the only teams playing 7 v 7 were Highlands and Simon Kenton.

Holmes had alot of drops for the first couple series, they found their rythm and got going. Desean Peterson was a handful for everyone on the field, IMO this was the best setup for 7 on 7 that i have seen in awhile. Now its time for the pads should be interesting the next couple of weeks!

Watched CovCath vs. Lakota West.

CovCath defense played very well. The Ritter kid is going to be a good one, he is fast and has good size.

I do not believe the 1st team give up a score with a couple picks.

Bir play ok, made some very good throws for TD's and the wide-out made some good catch with defenders on them.

Reese played at very well at a wide-out.

Bir still made mistakes, locked on to some of his receivers and forced a couple of throws.

All in all I think he played well.

If the front 4 plays as well as the other 7, CovCath will not need to score 30 points a game to win.

When I was leaving they were playing Campbell with a lot of 2nd and 3rd teamers playing.

I did ask about the Moeller game and was told CovCath played very well.

Excellent re-cap and nice to see Ozzie Sheehan in the mix as one of the most consistent WR's for the Birds. That kid has some wheels.
