The 10th is the only inning the situation you're talking came up in. Regardless, Stubbs did steal 2nd and the Phillies didn't walk Hanigan like you said they would in the no-brainer move.

The inning makes all the difference in the world though. In the 10th it's obvious a pinch-hitter is going to be used, whereas in the 8th, with Wood having a perfecto going, it's obvious the pitcher is going to be batting.

My gosh, what a boring game that must have been! I mean only one run scored through 11 innings and the Phillies never even got a hit base runner on, until the Ninth inning! How can anyone sit through that boring of a game.

What gets most folks excited in the USA about the World Cup is the USA. What keeps folks excited about baseball is the local interest. Hard to get reved up about a dude from Saville, playing for Spain against Ghana. Also, often in basball, there are chances to score or make moves, which is why people talk on boards like this. In soccer once you get near the goal-six people are flopping aroung hoping the referee calls a penalty, and you can go one on one with the goalie. I love playing soccer, but it is BORING to watch, and outside of the World Cup, of which I have a minute interest,no thanks for me to watching teams like the Columbus Crew, and LA Galaxy.:deadhorse::confused:

It was of course a great game because I understand the game and the sub plots that go on during the game. If some of you gave "Football" a chance and learned the rules and how the game is played my guess is some of you would enjoy the matches as much as I do Baseball and "Football"!

I think Dusty should have let Bray in to face Rollins. Switch hitters are usually much worse hitter batting RH than LH. Plus, I would have more faith in Bray than an Rookie trying to get Rollins out. Also, I not sure I would have given Hanigan another chance with a runner on third after striking out the first time.

That's exactly the kind of response I expected out of you and dmderringer. Obviously you don't follow the Red's as closely as I thought you do. Hanigan has been called on on several occassions over the last few years to sacrifice and I'm almost certain that Dusty used him to squeeze earlier in the year or maybe last year. He has always been a good handler of the bat as you noted. You guys have to admit that once again Dusty was afraid to give his team a chance to win with a decision he could have made. He left it up to a team that had mustered all of 4 hits and and had very few opportunities to score. Mike Scioscia would not have hesitated to pull the trigger in that situation or at least started Stubbs on the 1st pitch to Hanigan to avoid the double play and myabe steal a run. Make something happen for pete's sake you're on the road and your bullpen has been taxed the last 2 nights. You guys will go down defending Dusty's moves or lack thereof. He's really got you sucked into believing he is a good manager.

Rollins hits about 10 percentage points higher from the right side than the left for his career, and had hit from the right side all night. It wasn't a bad move going to Ondrusek in that situation.

I don't mind anything Dusty did last night. He has made a lot of questionable decisions in close games though IMO.

 

Hanigan had two chances to just put a ball in play and blew it. They need a win today.

If Bronson Arroyo is going to be a Red next year, it’s going to be at the $11 million salary his option calls for.

 

Arroyo said he would not consider extending his contract at discount rate like Scott Rolen did.

 

“Not in a million years,” Arroyo said. “Scott’s in a different position than I’m in. He’s in a position where he feels like he’s only got a couple years left in the game. He wanted to retire in this uniform. It’s close to his friends and family. He restructured because he’s made $150 million in the game or whatever it is.

 

“I’m not in the same boat.”

 

Given what Arroyo said, the Reds might consider moving him before the deadline. The club has a surplus of starting pitching.

 

Edinson Volquez and Aaron Harang are about to come off the disabled list.

 

Johnny Cueto, Mike Leake and Travis Wood aren’t going anywhere. Homer Bailey will come off the DL at some point.

 

Arroyo has been very good. He is 9-4 with a 4.04 ERA. He’s thrown 120 1/3 innings.

 

There’s no question the Reds can use Arroyo for the pennant drive. But he would be very hot commodity on the trade market. If the Reds don’t plan on picking up the option, it might be wise to move him. If they don’t pick up option, they have to pay a $2 million buyout.

 

It’s easy to understand Arroyo’s position. Arroyo signed a 3-year, $11.25-million deal with Boston in January of 2006 – only to be traded to the Reds in March of that year.

If he has 2 career sacrifices doesn't that make several? Didn't I say that I "believed" that he had used him on several occasions to sacrifice? I also said that I wasn't able to watch the game so I missed the fact that Stubbs had stolen 2nd. That should have been a nobrainer on Dusty's part. Most managers wouldn't even throw through on a steal attempt there. By the way how many runs did they score last night? Have you ever heard of trying to manufacture a run. It works in little league, high school and, college and it will darn sure work in the majors but you have to have to be willing to try things when your offense is stagnant. If Dusty continues to wait for the HR or a 2 out hit to bail him out we could be sitting at home come October like a lot of other teams. Please Dusty earn your pay.

 

What else do you want him to do? Lead off double and Dusty bunted him to third. I'm sorry that you just don't understand the fact that a squeeze play is very rare. When you become a manager you can call a squeeze as much as you want but that simple fact is that you just don't see it. You've got to trust your players to put the ball in play in that situation and it didn't happen. Dusty did all that he could.

I think they'll bring back one of Arroyo or Harang. Hopefully it'll be Arroyo. I wouldn't mind bringing him back to let the young arms develop more and possibly ship him next year at the deadline.
