Here's my question. Was Rolen completely unavailable for the game? If not how can they go 11 innings without getting him an at bat?

Okay I am going to preface this with the fact that I never heard or saw an innng of this game but watched it on my telephone/inernet. I was at a wedding/reception until 1:30am. I was aware of what was going on and have only one question. And by the way LRCW I did state this to everyone around me while it was happening. In the 10th inning the Reds had Bruce at third after a scarifice by someone and one out and Stubbs at the plate. He has proven recently that he is not a good bunter. He ended up walking. Hanigan was at the plate according to my internet site. Now I believe that Bruce is an above average base runner and I know that Hanigan is an above average bunter. Did gutless Baker even consider squeezing Bruce home at this point? I know you guys watched the game or at least listened to the game and can answer this. If he did not then this is another typical situation where the "Toothpick" can't pull the trigger when the game is on the line. Dusty "WILL" lose you more close games then he will win you. Game, set , match!!!!

I would almost believe that if St. Louis was any good, but they aren't, as of now.

How are the people who watched the game supposed to know if Dusty considered a squeeze?

 

If squeezing was as easy as you make it seem a lot more teams would do it in situations just like that in order to take a lead or tie the game. But it's something that's rarely seen done by any manager. There's a reason it's not seen much. Dusty tried it last night and it blew up in his face. I'm sure that's exactly what he wanted to have happen again.

Squeez play with Hanigan? Yeah that's a brilliant call. Hanigan is suddenly an above average bunter? Since when? How often is the #8 hitter called on to bunt? Is he bunting runners in scoring position for the pitcher? The fact is that Hanigan is hitting .333 with runners in scoring position, and had struck out only 7 times all year. So more times than not Hanigan is putting the ball in play. Dusty made the right call there.

Hanigan has been called on on several occassions over the last few years to sacrifice and I'm almost certain that Dusty used him to squeeze earlier in the year or maybe last year. He has always been a good handler of the bat as you noted. You guys have to admit that once again Dusty was afraid to give his team a chance to win with a decision he could have made. He left it up to a team that had mustered all of 4 hits and and had very few opportunities to score. Mike Scioscia would not have hesitated to pull the trigger in that situation or at least started Stubbs on the 1st pitch to Hanigan to avoid the double play and myabe steal a run. Make something happen for pete's sake you're on the road and your bullpen has been taxed the last 2 nights. You guys will go down defending Dusty's moves or lack thereof. He's really got you sucked into believing he is a good manager.

My gosh, what a boring game that must have been! I mean only one run scored through 11 innings and the Phillies never even got a hit base runner on, until the Ninth inning! How can anyone sit through that boring of a game.

It works in little league, high school and, college and it will darn sure work in the majors but you have to have to be willing to try things when your offense is stagnant. If Dusty continues to wait for the HR or a 2 out hit to bail him out we could be sitting at home come October like a lot of other teams. Please Dusty earn your pay.

Stubbs did steal 2nd. They pitched to Hanigan, who struck out then intentionally walked Nix (who pinch hit) to get to Phillips. So apparently it isn't as big a no-brainer as you think. :lol:
