Do you trade one for Lee knowing he leaves after the season is over?

 

If it is the difference between a playoff/world series contender to finishing second behind the cardinals and just barely missing the playoffs.

What if you can't get Lee to agree to a contract extension before making the deal?

 

I'd still do it. You don't play for the future when the present has a chance to be this good. I doubt unless the contract offer to Lee was crazy that he would do an extension anyway. We're talking about one pitching prospect that doesn't strike a lot of guys out. This isn't Strasburg they'd be dealing. I would hope Chapman is their lefty young starter that hits the big leagues by this time next year.

I'd have to answer your question with a question. What is more important, winning or adding to your multi million bank account now.

Young arms are a dice roll, one throw could be it all for the season or more. Always high risk but high reward.

If the Reds acquired Lee, offered him arbitration and lost him to free agency, they would likely get two first-round draft picks as compensation for him. That has to be considered in discussions of a potential deal.

If I knew I could get a couple year deal then I'd do it in a heartbeat. It was great what he did tonight but Lee/Haren are in the elite group of 10 or so pitchers that you could pencil in for close to 18 wins with a low 2. ERA. They are legit 1's no matter who they throw against much like Halladay who also threw another heck of a game tonight. Speaking of Halladay I felt like the Dodgers had a great chance to win it all last year if they signed him. Instead Philly made the moves.

I said it before in this thread and I'll repeat it. Leftys are at a premium and you always hate to trade one away early in their career. It seems to me the Reds have a very good problem right now.

Not me. I wouldn't consider any Red as "untouchable". The question is do you deal to try and make the playoffs this year, or are you content to keep waiting? If they stand pat and slide in the standings we will be hearing crickets at GABP for the 11th sept. in a row. I would think that Banana Bob would like to reverse that trend.

Haren is a very consistent pitcher over the last few years that will give you 14-15 wins and a 3.25-3.50 ERA. If his consistency holds true he is a big 2nd half of the year this year to get to that number. If they can get him and not give up the farm I would do that with him being signed through 2012 with a club option for 2013 as well. His salary of 12.5 million would basically take the place of Harang's as he is done in Cincy after this year.

And there is no way that I trade a 23 year old lefty with Wood's stuff, that the Reds control for the next several years at a much lesser price for either one of them.

It's still early, BUT I'm thinking hold on to the lefties longer. Just not that many lefties out there. If I had to move a lefty right now its Maloney. The others would still be Bailey, Lecure. I think Alonso is probably gone.
