Too many things to point out that cost the Reds tonight, but a few that stand out.

 

1. Phillips seeming to be in no hurry to turn the double play on Kendall in the 5th that cost the Reds a run.

2. Not sure why Dusty didn't bunt Bruce in the 10th with a runner at 2nd and nobody out. Not too upset about that one, but I like my chances a lot better with a runner at 3rd and 1out.

 

3. Votto cutting the ball of in the top of the 11th. Votto needs to let that ball go through unless he hears Hernandez yelling to cut the ball off.

 

4. Way too many missed opportunites in the 8th-11th innings. I honestly expect the Cards to sweep the D'Backs, so hopefully the Reds can bounce back, and take the next two.

Owings got the 1st out in the 11th but then walked Butler on 5 pitches and Pena on 4. You just can't give any teams gifts like that.

 

Okay...but did the other three not pitch brilliantly. If you are going to tell me that our bullpen (let me say that again...our bullpen that has pitched so bad lately) is going to pitch 4-5 innings and only give up one right, I'd take that.

If you pitch run for Ramon Hernandez and you don't win the game and it keeps getting played, who is playing catcher for you since Corkey was already gone and Hannigan is hurt. Ramon had to stay...no other option really.

 

Plus, they were running out of players in the dugout.

Since the other catcher had already been used they really didn't have another option. Janish or one of the position players would have had to have caught if the game had remained tied. I don't think anyone wanted that.

Says who? Bruce was so bad tonight he hit a HR and double. He didn't get it done in a sport where failing 70% of the time is a good thing. I understood you perfectly, and disagree..

Regardless what everyone thinks. The textbook move in that situation is to bunt. It's on Bruce if he doesn't get it done.

Bunting is the correct call there, IMO . Everyone knows that. Dusty was probably thinking two fly balls get the run in. He was likely more confident in Bruce getting the runner to third with a fly ball. Kinda sad really...

Who said it wasn't on Bruce? It's obviously a weakness in his game, and with that considered you send him up there to swing...

I think Dusty made the right call by having Bruce swing away. Now that isn't saying that Bruce shouldn't be able to bunt but from all of the statistics listed it doesn't sound like it is something that he can do very well. He's a pull hitter and with the way he has been swinging the bat I'd say he had as good a chance of moving the runner by swinging as he did by trying to bunt. What would have really gotten Dusty second guessed is if Bruce had popped up the bunt or went 0-2 trying to get it down and then struck out. The textbook situation is to bunt but the batter has to be considered also.
