June 6, 201016 yr http://www.cbssports.com/columns/story/11757857 It is really hard to dispute what he writes in this story, other than say timing.
June 6, 201016 yr Bad timing IMHO. I am not disputing what he is saying, but think that the timing is in bad taste.
June 6, 201016 yr Been waiting for this one from Doyel. Wooden was one of the best human beings in American history, but he was also at the helm of the program that first lived in the gray area that has consumed the sport. I'm sure Coach and Nell are talking about it from above already...
June 6, 201016 yr Doyel doesn't mind working the gray areas himself. He won't shy away from controversy and honestly, I enjoy talking to him.
June 6, 201016 yr I had always heard of shady dealings with the UCLA program when Wooden was winning a lot. Very bad timing but thanks for shedding the light on it. I still think yes Wooden knew, but what is wrong with helping kids out who need it. It just betters their life and I am sure Wooden probably thought the same too.
June 6, 201016 yr I agree with what Doyel has to say but I will re-iterate what most of said here... bad timing right now.
June 6, 201016 yr Clearly Doyel knows what he's doing, it would get the most hits by posting it now. I don't disagree with anything he said, but don't like the lean on Pete Carroll almost being an innocent lamb.
June 6, 201016 yr I think it is of bad taste. Why would you write an artilc criticizing a great man right after he died? I would say it is amazing the life he lived and what he did for people and how many lives hes touched. Why bring up something that he may have had nothing to do with to criticize the man?

June 6, 201016 yr Maybe I'm confused, but it appears to me that Doyel wrote the article in May of 2009? Am I wrong?

June 6, 201016 yr No it is not bad timing, this stuff has been out there for years but nobody wants to ever bring it up and it definately should be brought up. John Wooden cheated no if and or butts about it, Adolph Frederick Rupp has been dead since 1977 and nobody gives him a free pass for mostly made up material but John Wooden has been allowed even in life to skirt the issue. The only difference between the two men: Rupp didn't mind shaking people up and getting inside their heads while Wooden, and I'm not disputing this, was a kind a gentle soul. That is the only reason our so called impartial media wants to paint one a horrible person and the next a saint in the regards of a biblical sense. I'm just tired of the free passes this man has gotten for nearly half a century, the man cheated and if it hurts people's feelings or seems to harsh to say now then tough!

How do we know Wooden cheated? Can you give me some proof? The man died who without a doubt was an amazing man and one that did a tremendous amount of good in his life.
June 6, 201016 yr Maybe I'm confused, but it appears to me that Doyel wrote the article in May of 2009? Am I wrong? I think you got it. Looks like a reprint of an article he wrote 13 mos ago.
June 6, 201016 yr Wooden may have known about all of this going on, but let's be realistic the NCAA was totally different then. I'm sure all major programs had similar things going on, just not as successfully as UCLA did it.
