Ace, can you place the 10 commandments on the front porch of the school? Can you have a FCA meeting during club time during school hours?

 

Can you pray during school out loud before you eat? Can you bring up Bible verses in class? Can you debate a nonbeliver teacher if you are a student? Can you wear a Jesus shirt to school? Can you pray before a ball game, or if someone gets hurt? Can a student/teacher pray for a sick relative? Be honest if you answer.

 

How is any of the above discrimination?

Don't know really just ask the ACLU. Jesus in the schools, when one of my kids wants to write about a person and asks if he can write about Jesus the answer is no. He cannot lead a prayer in class time, and not one of you who has responded is in Jefferson County with this experince, so what do I have to draw from? How long has the ACLU been fightin Jesus? I thought is would be interesting to her from a Principle and I wrote it wrong and he took it personal. And I'm from the Bible belt where the state got in trouble with the Ten C's.

I have actually met with Lawyers who fight the ACLU thru the FCA about the thread topic. I have had meetings with these people several times and will meet again at camp in june. I'll get some info that I can pass along on here.

Religious Clubs: I don't know but when I was growing up in the 70's we met at Boyle county after school. that was more than 30 years ago so it's not like that's a new practice.

 

The Pharisees were chided by Jesus because they made Prayer "a show." I'm sorry but praying over food aloud at home is spiritual discipline, praying over food aloud in the school becomes show IMO. My prayer are heard by the content of my heart and not the volume I emit.

I haven't seen any examples. I have seen "wishes" as to how it was today but you can't say there is discrimination without showing how ONE side gets a "no" while the other gets a "yes."

AL, if you think you've given examples of Christians being discriminated against you're incorrect.

 

Lets take your Jesus/10 Commandments not in school issue. Unless you can show me where the Muslim version of the commandments are allowed to be posted on school walls you haven't proven that Christians are discriminated against. Unless you can show me where Muslims Athletes are allowed to have clubs during school hours you haven't shown how Christians are being discriminated against.

FWIW I think the teacher is wrong in the scenario, given the limited facts that we have. However, if the assignment was to write about a 'contemporary' person, then of course they would say no to 'Jesus'. Really depends on the assignment.

 

Why would your son need to lead a class prayer? Again there is very little info. If, someone is sick or injured and you find our during class, say something quietly, and then ask everybody if they want to get together during some non-academic time for corporate prayer. Time, place, reason always play a role.

 

The government hasn't taken Jesus out of the schools, it has taken itself out of promoting Jesus in the schools.

You Could and can at the School that my kids and I attended .

I know that before every Volleyball game played at our school ( NCC ) a short 1 minute prayer is read bv the public address announcer . Oh and there are no non believer teachers there .

What would you do? Stand to be polite. Join the prayer? See I think it is trickier than you may think. I am not trying to offend you, but just have you think outside the Catholic/Christian box.

I understand Jim, but even at a private institution, there will be times when not all there have the same belief system that you do, and I do think it is a weird situation at Catholic high school events when all are asked to stand and hear a prayer about Jesus and good competition and the like. Would the Christian/Catholics on here like it if their school matched up with a Muslim private school that prayed to Allah out loud before the game. I wouldn' t-being a Christian.

To answer your question, no.

 

Unless schools start allowing Muslims to have daily prayer, unless we start putting Allah on our flag or currency, unless we start having our students recite the Koran then its painfully obvious that Christians are not being discriminated against.

 

Your rights are as follows:

 

Go to any church you wish.

Worship any god you wish.

Don't go to church at all.

Marry people within or outside of your faith.

Be an atheist.

Be an agnostic.

 

 

So what rights are you looking for?

 

:thumb: I don't see how people could think they are persecuted. Not everyone in a school is Christian so why should there be a school wide prayer? To be fair you would have to have the Islamic prayer times, and perhaps conduct Wiccan seances while we're at it. The 10 commandments, prayer, being forced on everyone takes away from their individual rights and freedoms. Sure if you are a Christian you like to have that kind of stuff involved in your everyday life, but imagine if the country was predominantly Muslim and you were in the minority. I wouldn't imagine you would want to have to stop your day for their prayer schedule.

 

IMO it's not discriminating against Christians as much as it is trying to not prefer one religion over another so that everyones rights are preserved. There is no national religion in the United States, and though the wives-tale is that this country was founded on Christian beliefs many of the founding fathers were indifferent or in the case of some like Jefferson agnostic or athiestic. I love Jesus, think that prayer is a necessary part of my life but at the same time I don't want to shove it down anyone's throat. Failing to separate Church and State is as Un-American as it gets, and freedom of religion is one of the things many of our brothers and sisters, fathers and grandfathers and ancestors fought and risked their lives for.

It wouldn't bother me a bit. I don't have to share a persons religious beliefs to show respect when they express them.

History has it wrong and Jim Schue has it right . I don't care if people dont stand and pray along with our announcer . at least we are free to do so . and if we ever played a Muslim school in any sport and they prayed to Allah well I would stand and bow and pray silently to God and his Son and the Holy Spirit .

Exactly !!

I think that is easy to say with all the Catholic and Christian schools around, but suppose the St.Lucifer school which worshipped the devil played and asked everyone to rise up and say a few kind words about Satan. Whether they were private or not makes no difference. Just because you are private doesn't mean you can do everything you want to. Private doesn't equate to doing things outside the laws and boundries of the country.

 

On a separate note, the priests that abuse children should be prosecuted first by the church and then to the highest degree by the government. That is the sickest type of abuse possible...........
