I have heard a lot of discussion on the greatest championship football games & I was wondering what everyone's thoughts were on the best championship game in KY. There were the STX/Bryan Station OT game in '99, the Male/Trinity game in '02(?) & the Boyle Co/Lone Oak (OT) game in '09 that have been mentioned. Any other games that come to mind?

Two fantastic ones from 1995 that often get overlooked ... Mayfield over Beechwood 28-27 in the Class A final and Breathitt County's win over Franklin-Simpson, 42-35 in double overtime in the Class 2A final. Maybe the best two-game session in state championship history.

A couple of the 1977 championship games at EKU were very exciting, Mayfield defeated Corbin 14-13 in the 2A championship game, with Corbin getting stopped on a 2 point conversion attempt in the last minute of the game. Highlands also beat Shelby Co. 6-0 in the 3A game. I can't recall if these were in the same session or not though.

I believe Newport Central Catholic had a very exciting Championship game in '06. Don't quite remember all the details though, maybe someone can help me out.

That was the big fourth quarter comeback against Danville. Danville had beaten Newport Central Catholic twice in the state championship game in 2000 and 2001 and was considered a favorite by many in 2006, even though NCC was the defending state champions. But untimely turnovers by the Ads and capitalization by the Breds led to what ultimately became Bob Schneider's last championship. And interestingly enough, Danville has never been the same since that game either.

2 of CovCath's state title wins were goal-line stands where the clock ran out on the other team inside the 2 yard line. 94' against Bowling Green, and 97' stopping Artose Pinner and Hopkinsville.

I know this game gets a lot of talk but the thing that really gets me is the fact that no one ever talks about how pitiful both teams played on defense. We know that Male plays man defense all over the field but once someone hits you for a couple of easy ones why not change something. That game was nothing more than a 7 on 7 passing league game. I know I may get blasted but come on guys play a little defense!

 

96 NC/Paul Dunbar was a dandy decided on a missed XP in overtime.

I know this game gets a lot of talk but the thing that really gets me is the fact that no one ever talks about how pitiful both teams played on defense. We know that Male plays man defense all over the field but once someone hits you for a couple of easy ones why not change something. That game was nothing more than a 7 on 7 passing league game. I know I may get blasted but come on guys play a little defense!

 

If I remember correctly the numbers those two team put up on the defensive end that year were pretty impressive. It's not like stopping Brohm and Bush was simple because no one did it. Brohm put 44 on Elder who won the Ohio D1 title with a very stingy defense. It was simply two of the best players in the history of the state putting on a laser show in the 2nd half...

I can't think that a coach would go to a zone against Trinity's spread with Brohm at the helm. He would have picked that apart as well. Plus, Male runs man coverage- who is to say they even had a zone scheme in for that game beyond a prevent. I'm willing to bet that they didn't practice zone beyond prevent very often. I remember LexCath playing Male that year and saying "The only way to beat these guys is to out score them because no one will stop Bush". Brohm and company did that.

 

There was not a defense in the state that was going to slow down those teams on that day. St. X (16), Eastern (35) and Dixie Hights (31) were the only teams to hold Trinity under 40 all season in 15 games- including a demolishing of Cincinnati Colerain.

 

Male was held to 22 by St.X that year in their first meeting- then got 51 dropped on them in the playoffs. Lex Cath (35), Highlands (35) and Manual (27) did the deed and held Male under 40. Again, Male played 15 games.

 

My point is that the offenses on these two teams were stellar- even good teams like Highlands, St.X, Manual and Lex Cath couldn't slow them down. The offenses deserve major props and this is the greatest championship game in state history, IMO.

In the '97 game we were up 21-13 and were trying to stop Hoptown from potentially tying up the game when the clock ran out. In '94, we were trying to stop Bowling Green from scoring a winning TD on the goal line - they had a HUGE fullback in the game too.

 

The '88 game against Paducah-Tilghman was pretty incredible...Cov Cath won 30-24 in overtime.

If memory serves the top 3 classes all played on the same day then. I think 4A met on the next day.

What? No love for Danville over Mayfield 24-23 in OT in the '87 AA game?

 

Great comeback by Mayfield from 10 points down in 4th quarter to tie it. Ads score first in OT and then block EP for the win.

 

(to be honest though it was turnover marred game and I think the Ads turned it over about 3 or 4 times.)

I agree. :thumb: It was the best title game ever. No shame in any other game being just under that one.

Maybe, just maybe both offenses were so good that it made the defenses look bad. Trinity had a pretty stout defense that year shutting down some pretty good teams and offensively they scored lots of points on some pretty strong defenses including eventual Ohio champ Elder. Male was the same way.

 

ADD ON: And Maybe, just maybe I should read the entire thread before posting a redundancy.
