What good movies have you seen lately?

Featured Replies

Haven't gone back to read other pages in the thread, BUT I will thrown in a few I have seen over last month.

Disney's Frozen -- just didn't think it was that great, came across as generic Disney movie following same tire formula.

American Hustle wasn't great, but pretty darn good with solid performances all around

Anchorman 2 -- BIG disappointment, but kinda went in expecting that

Don Jon REALLY good movie, Joseph Gordon Levitt directoral debut did a fabulous job

Paranormal Activity: Marked Ones It's about what you can expect at part 5 of a franchise, not great, not bad

Her -- Joaquin is fantastic, but the conflict in relationship with OS feels forced and ending is very heavy handed

WHEW lol

Yes, I realize the thread title is "good" movies you have seen recently, but I'm too harsh a critic and rarely like anything. So I might as well mention everything I have seen recently : )

Checking out Tom Hanks new movie today.

Sitting in the theater and waiting for "Inside Llewyn Davies" to start.

Watched The Wolf of Wall Street last night.

Solid film.

Fantastic.

Too quiet to generate much buzz but a great musical and acting performance from Oscar Isaac.

The music was spectacular.

The Coen Brothers did it again. Just outstanding.

I really, really liked it. My wife? Not as much. It was a little darker, sadder for her.

Just watched "Pacific Rim" as a freebie from Time Warner Cable. I needed some rock 'em sock 'em fun before I go to bed.

^ Saw that trailer before "Inside Llewyn Davies". Looks really cool.

Both of you, Getslow & CWB, have stirred my interest in both the Coen Brothers's movie as well as the Tim's Vermeer movie. They both look tremendously interesting.

The Vermeer Doc Trailer intrigued me to search a little deeper as I had never heard of this type discussion with regard to painting technique.

It's baffling the great lengths this Tim Jenison guy went in studying and arriving at his theory of the methods and techniques of Vermeer. Jenison himself is pretty amazing as well when discovering more and more about his inventing and tinkering in general.

In going deeper on this I also came across another video made by an artist named Nigel Konstam who demonstrates his theory on Vermeer's techniques. With further reading on Konstam he also contends that to remove himself from his own reflection in the mirror while painting, Vermeer would sometimes paint a cloth in place of where his reflection would have been while painting.

It appears that the theories of Vermeer's techniques have been a point of discussion by art historians for quite some time.

I can't at all claim that I completely understand all of this, and my head is spinning a bit with trying to understand. In just delving into this for a little while I've developed somewhat of an anxiety attack when having to face the truth that there's just so much in life to learn, and so little that I know.

Recently saw Saving Mr Banks, Lone Survivor, Jack Ryan and American Hustle.

Mr Banks, was pretty good...kinda slow at times but overall good performances by Hanks and Thompson

American Hustle, I enjoyed it...the wife not so much. Really good acting throughout the movie

Jack Ryan, much better than I expected. I'm a huge Clancy fan so I was leery of this being a stand alone movie not based on any of the novels. Costner and Pine are both enjoyable and believable in this movie. Knightley also was a solid pick to play Cathy Ryan.

Lone Survivor...Run don't walk to see this movie. There are a few Hollywood liberties taken with the story but for the most part if follows the book and I think does an excellent job portraying what those guys went through.
