April 6, 201016 yr Get ready for this to heat up more than ever with the mix of this tournament combining with the lead in to the new NBA CBA becoming a total mess at this time next year. In the "one and done" era only Carmello Anthony starred in route to a title and Marvin Williams got his in a 6th man role at UNC. No clue how it will shake out after the dust settles, but the young studs simply aren't hoisting the trophy and the teams with less overall talent, but more seasoned players that have adjusted to their coaches system are walking away with the college crown...
April 6, 201016 yr I haven't done any research, but I think if one wanted to continue the argument in this thread they would need to look at how many teams per year have featured a(n) "one and done" player(s) versus those sporting veteran lineups. My intuition tells me there are a lot more seasoned teams out there, and thus a lot more seasoned teams not winning anything, which means those results might be a little skewed in that direction.

One could argue that this points to players actually getting better as they stay in school and gain experience? Not shocking to a logical thinker, but may be enlightening to some of these kids??

I wouldn't have it any other way. I watch college sports to see players work their tails off to succeed. If I wanted to watch talent only I'd watch the NBA. But to me the NBA isn't nearly as exciting.
April 6, 201016 yr Maybe because the "one and done" players are traditionally more about themselves and have their own agenda and behind the scenes winning the titles isn't necessarily their #1 priority.

April 6, 201016 yr Probably... Rule needs changed and let the kids go straight to NBA out of high school or stay at least 2 years in college. I think the whole UK thing is being overblown, with the one and done. You have the perfect storm this year. A generally weak draft and the looming lockout. Perfect storm if you ask me. UK needed an influx of talent and needed it badly...they did and now many of them are making the jump. Don't fault the kids, fault the system. Now it seems like it may repeat itself. Cal ain't dumb, he would like to add a few kids that may jump, and add some consistency to his roster. You need experience as well as some talent. Duke had a really nice team. It was also a team forged with the experience of three underachieving years with this core. A first round loss to VCU, second round to WV and got blown out by Nova in Sweet 16. I heard Digger and Bobby's rant...and it will become a good talking point. Needless to say Coach K nearly got John Wall and his handler was pushing Duke.
April 6, 201016 yr Author I haven't done any research, but I think if one wanted to continue the argument in this thread they would need to look at how many teams per year have featured a(n) "one and done" player versus those sporting veteran lineups. My intuition tells me there are a lot more seasoned teams out there, and thus a lot more seasoned teams not winning anything, which means those results might be a little skewed in that direction. When one doesn't do any research, they tend to go with the single most logical theory and hope it sticks. Obviously there is no perfect formula, but there have been a lot of big time talent one and done players over the last decade or so that simply aren't delivering a title. The hard part is separating the common theme of experience and breaking it down to what I feel is the real issue of leadership. Both are nearly impossible to measure, so it's nothing that can really be proven on either side except to point to the fact that none of these guys led a team to a title outside of Mello, and there are plenty of leadership voids in his game that year because of the Cuse zone not really needing guys to lead in the same fashion as a Wall or Rose who was out top directing traffic man to man. I'm simply saying this debate is going to gain a ton more steam now. This final four and the impending NBA stalemate are going to blow it up. I have my theories on why. Right or wron it is going to be a huge issue going forward in the very near future...

April 6, 201016 yr Pulled this from Matt Jones's site... Starting lineups of the past 10 NCAA Champions, with class of each guy in that season, and how many years that guy ended up playing in college: 2000 (Michigan State) Morris Peterson (Senior, 4-year player) AJ Granger (Senior, 4-year player) Charlie Bell (Junior, 4-year player) Jason Richardson (Freshman, 2-year player) Mateen Cleaves (Senior, 4-year player) 2001 (Duke) Chris Duhon (Freshman, 4-year player) Jay Williams (Sophomore, 3-year player) Mike Dunleavy (Sophomore, 3-year player) Shane Battier (Senior, 4-year player) Carlos Boozer (Sophomore, 3-year player) 2002 (Maryland) Steve Blake (Junior, 4-year player) Juan Dixon (Senior, 4-year player) Byron Mouton (Senior, 4-year player) Chris Wilcox (Sophomore, 2-year player) Lonny Baxter (Senior, 4-year player) 2003 (Syracuse) Kueth Duany (Senior, 4-year player) Hakim Warrick (Sophomore, 4-year player) Carmelo Anthony (Freshman, 1-year player) Craig Forth (Sophomore, 4-year player) Gerry McNamara (Freshman, 4-year player) 2004 (UCONN) Ben Gordon (Junior, 3-year player) Emeka Okafor (Junior, 3-year player) Rashad Anderson (Sophomore, 4-year player) Josh Boone (Freshman, 3-year player) Taliek Brown (Senior, 4-year player) 2005 (North Carolina) Sean May (Junior, 3-year player) Jawaad Williams (Senior, 4-year player) Raymond Felton (Junior, 3-year player) Rashad McCants (Junior, 3-year player) Jackie Manual (Senior, 4-year player) 2006 and 2007 (Florida) Corey Brewer (Soph/Junior, 3-year player) Taurean Green (Soph/Junior, 3-year player) Lee Humphrey (Junior/Senior, 4-year player) Joakim Noah (Soph/Junior, 3-year player) Al Horford (Soph/Junior, 3-year player) 2008 (Kansas) Russell Robinson (Senior, 4-year player) Mario Chalmers (Junior, 3-year player) Brandon Rush (Junior, 3-year player) Darrell Arthur (Sophomore, 2-year player) Darnell Jackson (Senior, 4-year player) 2009 (North Carolina) Wayne Ellington (Junior, 3-year player) Tyler Hanbrough (Senior, 4-year player) Ty Lawson (Junior, 3-year player) Danny Green (Senior, 4-year player) Deon Thompson (Junior, 4-year player) Now, I don’t mean to start anything, but do you notice what is missing from all the starting lineups of the NCAA champions of the past 10 years? One and done players. There has been all of ONE: Carmelo Anthony. How many of these 10 NCAA champs did not have at least one senior in the starting lineup: ONE. 2006 Florida. And all of those guys came back for another season. How many 2-and done players out of these 45 guys were on the national champion starting lineups? THREE.
April 6, 201016 yr ^^^ Marvin Williams was one and done for the 2005 Heels, but was the 6th man. He would have started on most teams in the nation that year.
April 6, 201016 yr For a UK fan to understand that 1 and done MAY not be the route....98 Cats vs. 2010 Cats. Simple...case closed.
April 6, 201016 yr I think the whole debate is overblown. People keep citing Kentucky as to why it does not work. While it did not work, they still won 35 games in a BCS conference and were in position. The "perfect mix" was not Duke as many want to portray. The way I understand it, Kansas had the perfect formula with experience and a one-and-done type talent in Henry. Yet they lose in the second round. This is not the NBA where the best team always wins the title people. It is a single elimination tournament all played in neutral environments. The formula for winning is only as good as the team that wins it all.
April 6, 201016 yr For a UK fan to understand that 1 and done MAY not be the route....98 Cats vs. 2010 Cats. Simple...case closed. What about the 11 UK teams in between that did not have one and done talent?
