The One And Done Debate

Featured Replies

I think the whole debate is overblown. People keep citing Kentucky as to why it does not work. While it did not work, they still won 35 games in a BCS conference and were in position. The "perfect mix" was not Duke as many want to portray. The way I understand it, Kansas had the perfect formula with experience and a one-and-done type talent in Henry. Yet they lose in the second round. This is not the NBA where the best team always wins the title people. It is a single elimination tournament all played in neutral environments. The formula for winning is only as good as the team that wins it all.

Excellent point.:thumb:

To win the title you have to be very good and pretty lucky. UNC last year may be the only exception. Duke was a block/charge call away from a potential loss earlier and could have been taken down by a half court shot last night. They earned it obviously but they had some luck like almost every other champion. Kansas was extremely lucky to win it when they did or a one and done point guard would have won one. Ohio St was really close to having a couple one and done starters win one. It will happen and soon if they don't chage the rule.

It will happen AGAIN. Carmello already did it.

Probably...

Rule needs changed and let the kids go straight to NBA out of high school or stay at least 2 years in college.

I think the whole UK thing is being overblown, with the one and done.

You have the perfect storm this year. A generally weak draft and the looming lockout. Perfect storm if you ask me.

UK needed an influx of talent and needed it badly...they did and now many of them are making the jump. Don't fault the kids, fault the system.

Now it seems like it may repeat itself.

Cal ain't dumb, he would like to add a few kids that may jump, and add some consistency to his roster.

You need experience as well as some talent.

Duke had a really nice team. It was also a team forged with the experience of three underachieving years with this core. A first round loss to VCU, second round to WV and got blown out by Nova in Sweet 16.

I heard Digger and Bobby's rant...and it will become a good talking point. Needless to say Coach K nearly got John Wall and his handler was pushing Duke.

This is exactly how I feel :thumb:

You're right my bad. I mean it will start happening more frequently. The cute little 10 year stat is a bit flawed b/c a lot of great players went straight from high school to the NBA. If LBJ/Kobe/Garnett go to a good college I think they may have pulled it off.

I agree 100%.

It would have been scary to see LeBron in college. Even for one season. Name one coach that would have said, "we only want guys that will be here for 3 years." Yeah right.

I also think people fail to realize UK didn't have a full roster to work with coming in to the season. There were so many talented young guys because there was no one in front of them to keep them from playing. Why wouldn't Wall, Bledsoe, Cousins, & Orton come to UK where there was no talent at their positions (PG, SG, C)? How many of these coaches and analyst would not have wanted those players if they could have gotten them?

Sure, I don't think it will be pretty next year compared to this one, but in the future I would expect UK to look more like Cal's Memphis teams which had talent at all levels frosh through seniors. I don't know if anyone has ever had more than 2 one and dones, let alone 4.

For starters, nobody thought Orton and Bledsoe would leave after one season.

UK was 35-3 with a team that could have easily cut the nets down. Not to mention, they lost to a very good basketball team.

I'm tired of this debate. I think they should leave it alone.

^Ohio State had 3 with Oden, Conley, and Cook.

Yep. They easily could have won the title too. They also should have lost to Xavier in the 2nd round. It usually takes talent and luck to win the title.

And UT had them down 20 before Pearl's kids stopped running an offense as usual.

What about the 11 UK teams in between that did not have one and done talent?

Goop point...very good point. I guess I still like to "get to know the kids" and have them around for a while. Now, granted Wall and Cuz truley seemed to embrace being at UK and were a joy to watch, but I think they are the exception to the rule. I agree, we need that superstar talent, Cal just needs to be here a few years to mix in some leadership with it.

This argument is ridiculous, you get the best players you can. 1 and done or otherwise. The numbers are obviously skewed because of the amount of great high schoolers who went straight to the league from Garnet to Howard. If some of those guys would have spent 1 year in school there would be a few more 1 and doners with rings.

If UK would have won the title would Digger and the likes be talking about 1 and done as the way to go? 35 wins are obviously not enough to be deemed a success

I agree you recruit the best players possible...but I don't think you win a title without some experienced players in there also.
