Cal: Stuff surrounding the program will not go on next year...

Most everyone on my HS team cussed at times during games, practice, etc... And none of them cussed at teacher, bosses, or cops. It's not that hard to understand when and where you can do it.

You would think so, wouldn't you. But they don't.

I get "it's my freedom of speech" to curse and you can't stop me from cussing you out all the time.

When I coached and someone dropped a cuss word out of frustration or anything else the student athletes would run a "champion drill" (aka suicide for some) for every letter of the word they dropped. "Foul" language was a violation for practice, games and locker rooms just like a personal foul is a violation on the floor. It is a choice to speak profanity not a right when it offends others. If the camera and microphone wasn't so close to Orton to begin with, no one would have heard him cuss to begin with. The only place where microphones are needed is at the announcers table. If my 150 dollar video camera can disable the microphone surely one of those 10,000 dollar cameras along the sidelines can disable their microphones.

Any kid blaming his foul mouth on Orton and Wall is lying.

Those kids you deal with, LLBC, are just bad kids with no respect and that is sad. I hate that you have to deal with such ignorance.

Athletes are not role models, little kids shouldn't be looking up to them anyways. If they are, that's bad parenting IMO.

Filing charges for saying some cuss words? That's an extreme reaction if I've ever heard of one. What harm do the words do? The answer is none.

I couldn't disagree more.

It's funny that is one position and then there are the others that we don't do enough as teachers.

And what do you think my classroom would be like if I let every student in there curse me out throughout the day. Think a lot of learning is going to occur?

They come to school thinking it is acceptable to curse because that is the way communication happens at home and what they see on tv.

Someone has to teach them that is not appropriate language in all settings.

Amen.

This is getting a lil blown out of proportion. It's not like Bobby Petrino not allowing the Falcons to talk at the dinner table.

There was a time when everyone was free to speak about whatever they wanted but they would also be held accountable by those around for the words. In other words, you were free to curse at a teacher but the teacher would wear your hind end out so you knew there were consequences for your decisions of how you exercise your freedom. If you talked bad to a girl, her big brother would kick your butt. Now days the person who teaches the lesson is the politically incorrect person. When these kids curse out their boss and get fired they feel like they've been wronged. The system we've morphed into has failed this generation. Freedom only works with accountability.

I do not think that cussing would have brought about Coach Cal's public comment. I think there are other things that happened that most of us are not aware of. As far as cussing, the players are students participating in a school activity. Although it is on a big stage, a UK basketball game is a school activity. Is it ok for a student to cuss in public at a school activity? I do not think so, nor do I think anyone that works with students in a school setting would think so. Will it happen? Absolutely. But to say it is ok and not address it is not helping the student learn self discipline.

What % of the kids in your school do you get that from?

I understand where LBBC is coming from and having read a great deal of LBBC's posts, would be shocked if there was any exaggeration to these posts. It is LBBC's job, as well as mine, to make it clear this behavior has repercussions.

I find it hard to believe that a college coach would have a major concern with this without the player having a mike in their face, however.

How do you know who it offends?

This is all I am talking about. Let one loose and you run a lap or two or motivational opportunity (running).

95% of the students:D:D

Check your PM

I will say this: IF coarse language is the biggest of UK's concerns from here on out they're in pretty good shape. I do not defend the language, but if you walk around in public pretty much anywhere you will hear language you do not like.

Also, as far as the language goes, not every kid on every team will be from our beloved "Bible Belt" and will have some very diverse background and will use the language from habit and environment. (There are some rough places in this world not as sheltered as we appear to be.)

If these kids are punished, how about the kid that is always trying to push beliefs on others or just has rotten social manners (i.e. "Breaking Wind" which is not always involuntary)? How should they be handled?
