Top 5 most disappointing UK tourney losses?

Featured Replies

How about the loss to LSU in the elite 8 after UK had beaten them 3 times already that season.

Beat you by 7 minutes.

But great minds think alike.

I will never forget the Marquette game.

Which one?

1955, 1969, 1971, 1994, 2003, or 2008?!:D

Should I have said the D-Wade game?

UK was ranked number one in both the AP and coaches' poll in 1966 going into the tournament. Texas Western didn't get one of the four number 1 seeds.

Texas Western is listed as Utep.

Neither UK nor Texas Western were in the top 10 at the beginning of the season.

Hit START MOTION to see how the polls changed throughout the season.

Texas Western was #3 on March 8th after dropping from #2 on March 1st.

That is like saying it would have been a HUGE UPSET for Syracuse to win the tournament this year.

1. Texas Western 1966 championship game. Flu bug and injuries got the best of the Cats. Plus, Texas Western was pretty darn good.:sssh:

2. UCLA 1975 championship game. Wooden's last game. No way UCLA was going to lose this game, regardless of how the Cats played.

3. North Carolina 1977 regional final. UNC gets the lead and plays stall ball the rest of the game. Hit all their free throws too. Knocked UK out of what would have been back to back national championships imo.

4. Arizona 1997 championship game. Derek Anderson's injury keeps UK from winning another title.

5. Marquette 2003 regional final. Bogans played injured but I don't know if it would have mattered. Wade was incredible that day.

6. Louisville 1983 regional final. UK's Minniefield should have been given the Louisville MVP at their awards banquet that year.

7. Georgetown 1984. Twin towers and a great team but they could score in the second half. Unreal poor shooting. Lead at halftime didn't last long.

8. Jacksonville 1970 regional final. Bogus charging call on Dan Issel cost UK another national championship banner imo.

9. North Carolina 1995 regional final. Rhodes laid an egg in his last game in a UK uniform. UK had blown out every team up to that point, and if they take care of this game like they should have I believe they would have cruised to the national championship.

10.(A) Duke 1992. Team overachieved but it was a hurtful loss.

10. (B) Michigan 1993. Mashburn fouls out on a bad call and Dale Brown's injury late in the game defeated the Cats. UK was ref-jobbed in this one.

Very solid list and I agree with 1966.

Misinformation ...

From who? I know I read the article in the LH, and heard Pitino state that Anderson was given clearance to play, and looked great in practice.

If it came from Rick it was misinformation. C'mon man you should know that by now.

Anderson said at the time that he could run and jump and dunk, but no mention was made of his ability to move laterally.

It simply wasn't there.

Personally, I think it was said and done to make the NBA people feel like he was recovering quickly.

Sure both of those games were disappointing, but they still don't compare to the 1984 game to me. The Cats shot 9%, yes 9% from the field in the 2nd half in that game after leading by 7 at the half. How does that happen when you have two 7 footers, both of which had been All Americans, a 6'9 guy that can jump out of they gym, and a guard that was a great shooter from the outside.

That was the most disappointing game for me EVER for the Cats in the tourney. I was going to college in Indiana at the time, and you can imagine the punishment I took during and after that 2nd half. I have never seen a team so cold in my life.

The '92 loss to Duke, while disappointing was such a great game and the Cats were playing so far above their heads that I can't call it a long term disappointment now. At the time, it really hurt, .... but the game was tremendous. The '84 game, .. at least 1/2 of it was just painful to watch.

I wasn't old enough to remember the 66 game, but I was for the 1970 loss to Jacksonville in the Elite Eight. That's # 1 on my list. I pretty much agree with the rest. However, the 1992 lost to Duke does not make my list at all. I was disappointed, but the Cats were not even supposed to be in that game and they almost won it. Yesterdays loss was much more disappointing, because that was one they should have won.
My question to you is do any of those come close to March 1980? :sssh::D

That was the first NCAA tourney game I ever went to.

Macy was a dead lock to hit the jumper but it bounced off after a great comeback. The door was open for the Cats to get to the Final Four with Purdue upsetting IU in the previous game but it wasn't to be. Tough way for UK's "Mr. Clutch" to end his career.

I'll go with 1984 Georgetown. It was painful watching missed shot after missed shot.

I would have to add a mid-80's game versus LSU and a John Williams.

If memory serves UK had beaten a good Alabama team in the Sweet 16 for the 3rd time. Had to face LSU for the fourth time in the Elite 8 and couldn't pull it off.

Sky-Walker was one of my favorite all time players and he was on this team.

Others for the reason already mentioned:

Arizona 1997, hit a free throw Nazr

Marquette and Michigan State

and 1993 Michigan game because myself and my new wife was in attendance at that game.

Actually UK played Alabama and LSU 4 TIMES !! that year.

UK beat the Tide all four times (who actually finished SEC runner-up to UK that year and was considered the stronger team) but went 3-1 vs. LSU to end Kenny Walker's career.

#2 & #9 & #10 were the ones that hurt me the most!
