NFL Tweaks OT

Why not vote for it for the regular season as well? I also find it interesting that the Vikes opposed the change. Mike Brown also opposed, he thought the previous rules made the game exciting.

He is right about that but it is still stupid.

Same question here.

Looks like it will be considered.

The proposal passed 28-4. As it is written, the rules change applies just for the postseason, but the owners also decided to discuss adopting the changes for the regular season at their next meeting, in May in Dallas.

Does anyone know what is wrong with just playing an additional 10-15 minute quarter? Maybe like college after that, but why is everyone so against just playing an entire quarter?

I like the college rules better than NFL. Think post season only is dumb. So you are saying that a game comes down to OT to get to the playoffs that the smart thing is keep that game like it is now? Makes no sense to me. I think they need to tweak the whole season to where both teams get the ball.

Potential injuries. Personally, I thought they needed to revise the OT in the NFL and I like this comprimise. I am glad that they didn't consider the college rule which I do not like. In college they take a 100 yard field and narrow it down to 1/4 of the field.

I agree with you. I also agree with this change.

I like the change but I think it needs to be adopted for the regular season as well.

Why play the game differently in OT? That is why I don't like either way, college or pro. They should play an extra 5 or 10 minutes. The argument against that is injuries. You can get injured in practice, you can get injured in the first minute of a game, you can get injured in the last minute of the game.

At the least, I think they should have tried it this season to see how it worked.

It isn't just that you could get injured in a 15 minute or 10 minute or even 5 minute overtime period. If you make them play out the entire period each time what happens in the playoffs if the game remains tied after a couple of periods due to both teams scoring? There's a reason that teams have a week between games--the physical punishment at that level is extreme. It would not be a good thing to have a 3OT game with the physicality of the NFL game--its hard enough on basketball teams to play multiple overtimes. I realize it could still happen in a playoff game if neither team scores or if each team only kicks a field goal but the chances are much less likely than if the whole period is played out no matter what.

As someone just said, what happens if they are still tied after that quarter? Do they play another quarter after that? Do they go back to the sudden death rules after that? Which would then just lead to the same problems we have right now. Not to mention, having a whole other quarter, just extends the game longer, which leads to tv programming problems.

I think this rule is a very good rule. They should definitely consider making it a rule for the season too.
