NFL Tweaks OT

Featured Replies

I always hated sudden death OT. Fight for 60 minutes and perhaps your backups let the opposing team return for a TD.

I do like the college game. Everybody get a turn and if you go second, you can choose to kick or convert for 2pts. Still exciting!

I do agree this is an improvement to what was a poor way to settle a tie. I am partial to the college version of OT play though.

Now here is an interesting question under the new system.....

If you win the coin toss to you take the ball or kick off?

If you choose to kick off to the other team and you can force them to punt your team can win on a FG. The only risk you take is giving up a TD.

You take the ball.

Heard the arguments for not having it in the regular season today. Makes sense. Injuries in case it goes a bunch of OT's in a row and the team has a quick turnaround on the next game. Biggest reason was the TV stations. This is really going to mess up the TV schedules in regular season for the doubleheader games. Makes sense.

I am not sure if that is correct or not. I was under the impression that if one team scores a FG, that the other gets at least one more possession.

Only if the FG occurs on the first possession of OT. So if Team A gets the ball first and scores a FG, Team B will get the ball with a chance to tie or win. If Team A is forced to punt it now goes to sudden death.

You take the ball.

I don't know. Playing in late December in January in bad weather, may sway the thinking on that.

Take the ball. If you can win the game with a kickoff return or a big play on offense, that trumps any negatives.

The college OT rules are goofy. I've always thought that all three phases of the game (offense, defense AND the kicking game - including kickoff return/coverage) should come into play when deciding a game's outcome.

You take the ball, no questions asked. If you kick a FG, the other team still has to score a TD to beat you.
