WVU 54 Cincinnati 51

Featured Replies

The play was drawn up for it to go right back to Vaughn...

I figured so it looked like they tired but geesh. Wouldn't you rather Stephenson, Wright, or Vaughn have it over him? Oh well easy to say now but Dixon would have been the 4th option IMO.

And that's likely why it was designed that way. Option 4 is a solid G with very good quickness. Have him break free on the inbound, make the catch and get it back to Vaughn. WVU was going to deny Cash and Lance as hard a possible. While it wasn't a perfect play design, it did produce the desired result until Dixon saw an opening to push on his own and made a mistake.

Hopefully this team realizes the growth they have made as a team and makes getting back to MSG a goal...

Feel bad for Dixon, it was gonna be a half court runner probably, maybe they should have thrown it in past half court. Coaching lesson for Mick... put someone on the guy throwing the ball in. On to the NIT at least there getting some post season action.

You would think that Pitino would have taught him that.

What was Gates going to change guarding the inbounds? .

Maybe it wouldn't have changed anything. However, it surely wouldn't have hurt. Maybe he makes it difficult enough to get the throw in that the thrower feels rushed and passes it to someone other than WV's #1 option. Maybe he deflects it. Maybe he forces a 5 second call. Maybe he forces a pass into the backcourt. Maybe....

Any of those possibilities would be better than having a 6'9 guy stand where he has no effect on the play.

The WVU play as described by Butler was for him to catch on a curl and go to the rim. Gates was standing right at the spot that was supposed to happen. That forced him out to 25 feet with time to catch, take one bounce and throw up a prayer with Lance right in his face. It banked in. That's the game sometimes...

The problem for Mick as I see it is he has virtually nothing he can count on. Every player on the team is so inconsistent it makes it almost impossible to design plays. I was very impressed with Mick's coaching in this tournament, including the last two plays of the game. Vaughn was open on the in bounds play but never got the ball back. How can you complain about the defense on that last shot? I would love to see my opponent take that shot every time that situation occurs. The Bearcats clearly played hard for their coach and hopefully they will carry this momentum into a nice run in the NIT. Mick has UC right on the cusp of being a top 25 team again.

c/mon man-UC on the brink of being in the Top 25? You are dreaming!

Anyone think Stephenson's play in the BE Tourney has him thinking about making the jump to the league with the 2011 lockout looming?

Where's the love for Butler hitting a very difficult shot with UC players all around him! WVU the only team with a double-bye moving on.

This game produced 3 of the top 10 plays on ESPN.

Congrats to a scrappy UC squad. They very close to being very good. Hopefully Cronin gets it all put together next season.

Hope they get a good draw in the NIT and make a run in that tournament. Shame they couldn't have made it further in the BE.

Parker was awful tonight with the ball. If you want to blame it on Dixon having a bit of a bad ankle, fine. He's good with the ball and made a critical mistake. If minutes is the argument, why did Parker play so little tonight? He flat out wasn't solid against WVU putting pressure on the ball...

OK, so Dixon has had a bad ankle, and thus the reason for him playing so little the last 5 games. Fair enough. But why have a guy out there at the end that just hasn't handled the ball much lately? Your top 3 are Vaughn, Wright, and Stevenson. If the design was truly suppose to go back to Vaughn, then I ask why? There are 6 seconds left and you design a play to pass the ball backwards in the backcourt?

To get the ball inbounds maybe? Novel concept...
