What is the status of Scott High Coach Brad Carr?

Featured Replies

It's just a game. And they keep score. This isn't the YMCA. Not everyone gets a trophy. Kids are soft these days.

I know, I know, verbal abuse is damaging to the psyche of these moldable young men. Is it a possiblity that through some of the "abuse" there is some accountability taught? Some sense of resposibility to the team and doing one's job for the betterment of the whole?

I'm not for a coach going on a profanity-laden tyrade in the face of a high schooler, and maybe that's what you're speaking of here. If so, I'm off base and apologize. If that's not the case, I suggest the kids take up home-ec and put the ball away.

And sometimes when they do, they leave it in the locker room!

Yes you are correct, but is it okay to verbally abuse someone regardless? You are basically saying that because it is a competetive game and they keep score it is fine, right?

Its just a game !!!! If a boss was acting that way toward him you can bet your rear end he would be out looking for another job. Those kids can quit, sure they can but they arent getting paid to play ball. It is an extra-curricular activity that the kids are supposed to enjoy. One that will provide them memories and not nightmares or turn them off to sports all together.

So I guess since they keep score in my 3rd grade games I coach its okay for me to act like a jerk to my kids. :ohbrother:

Doesn't Kenton Co have open enrollment? If so, problem solved, if a parent wants to baby their kid all their lives then send them to Dixie or SK if they think they will be better off.

I am reading this and having a hard time believing that this is actually being debated. I am 42 years old and was coached since 2nd grade in sports by coaches who were quiet, some were stern and some were down right scary. I have been called everything but a milk cow, picked up by my facemask and picked up by my little league uniform (and some chest skin) for moping off the field instead of running off the field. I, and my teammates, turned out fine. I grew up to be a doctor and now coach JFL football, help with basketball and baseball and am on the sidelines with our high school football team. If you want to take the time to coach, then do it and leave the ones currently doing it alone. They have earned the right to coach how they want and if the school is happy with him/her then keep quiet. I am more concerned by what the kids think of their coach and what his colleagues think. I have heard some say that kids are different now and you have to coach differently. I say that's a crock. The kids are soft because of their parents and whiny because their parents are whiny. If your kid is learning the game and is happy, leave well enough alone. If he doesn't like it, don't go out next year. The quicker these kids learn how the real world turns, the better! You can't fix all their problems and shelter them from the reality that life is hard and sometimes unfair.

So, to sum up my rambling thoughts...........be an example to your kids to show them how to react to hard times with class and dignity rather than bad mouthing and being negative. These kids are watching you and they are sponges and will go on to become the same as you or worse. So, before you go criticizing people for taking the time from their families to coach your kids and mold them for the future, ask yourself how you want your kids to turn out. JMO.

This isnt about sheltering kids from reality its about a coach who verbally abuses his players and does it publicly. Sure I was called some names by my past coaches and it was bad enough in front of other players but never treated disrespectfully during a game or in front of a crowd.

Glad you survived and are now a physician which really has nothing to do with this argument, people can be productive citizens in other ways but still have hatred for past coaches due to this type of treatment.

Lets just call a spade a spade here.

I just hope he can find an administration that will put up with it.

Again,

1) As was asked by a few other posters, where was this parent when other kids on the team were yelled at? Or was everything fine until the coach yelled at their son? Where were the complaints a few months ago?

2) Does anyone know for sure if a parent actually complained about the coach?

3) If they did complain does anyone know how the school board reacted?

Or is everthing just speculation?

So.............I guess I will ask the question.......is the Scott administration really looking to make a change??????????????????????

You can also say that if they won the Region this may not even have come out. Its funny how some parents, especially of Sr's stir the pot when they realize Lil Johnny's career is over.

Wow, I have tried to follow this thing, and frankly, I'm lost.

So, let me see if I'm up to speed.

First, are we talking about the same coach when we are talking about the verbal abuse?

Second, I'm all for raising your voice to kids, ripping them when they need it. I think sometimes that gets misconstrued for abuse. However, I'm sure that there are cases of abuse, is that what we are saying this coach does?

Third, do we really need research to show that sometime negative reinforcement is necessary.

And lastly, I never knew of Scott High school until recently, and that should be enough proof that something is going in the right direction.

As for sidelinedoc, agree with your post. :thumb:

I think we should be careful in assuming that its one player and their family. All we know is someone posted a rumor. Lets take it easy on the kid in question.

Speak in generalities.

Carr has never "verbally abused" a kid ever at Scott. He gets on them and it is often magnified due to the fact that he is very loud and vocal during games so it appears to be worse than it really is. Carr has the kids best interests at heart and has always had time for them and their needs. We are talking about the integrity of a guy who has given Scott so much. If Carr is really out of line, why hasn't there been more issues in the past? Why now all of a sudden?

You can also say that if they won the Region this may not even have come out. Its funny how some parents, especially of Sr's stir the pot when they realize Lil Johnny's career is over.

Can you say for sure if this is all just rumors? Can you answer 1, 2 or all 3 of my questions? Is this even an issue and if so what did the administration at Scott do about it?

It is funny, or sad, how some parents do not complain about issues until it deals with their son.

Yea 20 yrs ago and he had a shortlived stay if you remember.

Coach Duffy was the second best coach Highlands ever had in football. Only Dale Mueller is better. Coach Duffy won crowns in Fort Thomas and at Danville before that. Got Highlands back on the right track. Seriously-take a look-there was a brief period in time when Highlands was down in football-right before Duffy. He then did pretty well at Henderson County, although he never won state there.

As for Coach Carr-he is a winner, and Scott would be making a mistake to get rid of him.

I sat behind his bench one game last year. He called a time out and personally screamed at a player and used all the words we can not use on BGP for the entire time out. Never set up a play, just screamed at the boy.

As I said before, you know what you are getting when you play for him. If you don't like it, don't play for him. Though I did not care for the idea of burning a time out and not using it constructively, I think he does a nice job overall. He is a competitor and demands the most out of his kids.

I think we should be careful in assuming that its one player and their family. All we know is someone posted a rumor. Lets take it easy on the kid in question.

Who is the kid in question I hope you're not talking about the O'Connor's. Daniel is one of the nicest boys you'll ever meet and from what I have gathered they have not said a word its the administrators that are fed up with Coach Carr's antics. Good coach or not we all answer to our bosses unless you're self-employed or unemployed. If they tell you to stop yelling at your players you'd better stop being defiant and listen to them or find a job somewhere else.
