How many will Henry county hold?

Give me the Field House at Holmes any day over Conner. I attended a game at Conner and will never do it again. I actually ended up sitting in the aisle steps due to people making sure they had enough room for their butt's and their kids butt's.

Who plays there?

I would imagine most of the big gyms were built during the earlier days of county consolidation. The most likely time frame would be around 1970-1980. I believe Pulaski County opened their around 1975.

 

Per a post in another thread, the first game in the Mason County Fieldhouse was held in January 1965.

I think Knott County Central's gym opened around 1975, right after Knott County High, Carr Creek, and Hindman consolidated to form the school.

Knott Central had around 1200 students when they first consolidated but I think the school is below 700 now. I'd say the only time they fill it up is during the regional tournament.

It would be nice if people who have pics of some of these palaces posted them. I look forward to every chance I get to see a gym I've never been in, large or small. Of the large ones listed I've been to the Fieldhouse, Henry County, Greenup County, GRC, Montgomery County and the Spectrum where St. Francis plays. Gotta love the history of some of these old gems!!

I would have thought Clay County's gym held more than the 3,800 listed at capacity.

Pulaski's holds just under 6500. Was originally scheduled for over 8700 with complete rounded endzone but scaled down at last moment.

 

Henry's is bigger than orginal group listed here.

 

The Spectrum that Male used years ago is not as big as these other listed. Maybe 3000 tops, but a wonderful place to watch a game.

Isn't Clay County's gym built in the same style as Bell County's and Middlesboro's? Both those seat around 3,500, I think.

When David Evans field house was opened in 1968 they said it would seat 3500 with plans for expansion to take it to 5000 but I guess the need never really arose to add a balcony. I also don't believe that it seats that many but it might. It's hard to believe that it is that old of a gym.

I was sitting on the CovCath bench, watching the first Ninth Region Championship game played at the David Evans Field House in 1968.

 

CovCath vs Campbell County and CovCath won by 31 that night! :thumb:

The KHSAA can only record what is reported to them. IMO some of the figures, for whatever reasons, are inflated to some degree.

I know our gym at Owsley County is listed as seating 1500, but it won't seat that many. Maybe 1200 at max.

I've been in some of the gyms listed on the KHSAA website, and I don't think many of them will seat what is listed. I know one school in particular in my neck of the woods that is about 1200 over what it can actually seat.

I will agree with you, especially with the bench style seating that the majority of the HS use! I think that they use the butt size of a 1st grader when listing the seating numbers, instead of an adult or even a teenager!

I love Evans Fieldhouse. Its wide open, no backboards hanging on the sides, no bad seats in the house, can always see the scoreboard.
