Dont get to excited about "the system". It has been around for quite a while now, and only 1 team who truly ran it has won a state title. Many more teams (even in the past few years ) have won titles playing smashmouth rather than "the system".

 

Plenty of teams have run the system and made it to the championship. Lex Cath won, LCA won...that's two. Quite a few have made it to the finals only to come up short (I would say making it is a feat in itself). Lots of teams that run smashmouth don't make it to the title game as well. However this thread isn't about those teams, and HC has done very well running the system and that will continue under Graham.

I didn't even know that what we ran was the system. I prefer being under center in short yardage situations but I can't complain about the results for the most part. I still say the talent is available to be very versatile.

Really. The only team that won state last year that didn't run some kind of spread was St. X, and the team they beat in the finals was a spread team. I don't think that's an accurate statement.

 

Several teams have won a state championship that DO NOT run the spread offense. I have watched it for over 30 years. I have seen a few teams run the spread and lose it because of that. They get on the one yard line and line up in shotgun. They didn't know how to get under the center and punch it in.

Yeah, 10 years ago. Times have changed. The two teams in the super bowl were spread teams. You can't line up and pound people into submission any more and win championships. The game has evolved.

Franklin's push was to throw the ball 90% of the time, convert one out of three passes for a first, and lengthen the game to give you more plays to go to the air. I think you will find champion teams that run the spread believe, and are able, that they have to run the football well. There was not one team that one state this year that could not run the ball well. I think the term the "system" is overused in confusion with running a spread offense that relies on a 50/50 split of air and ground.

I disagree with your ideas on Tony. LCA was a client of Tony Franklin (that is where the term the System comes from) and they won the title but ran the ball very well. Mayfield is also a client of Tony's and they are generally much more run oriented-lost to LCA. Look at the teams Tony has coached, they have been able to run the ball very well (MTSU and Troy-both had success running the ball and both won championships). Mumme's version maybe different, but Tony certainly believes in running the football. HC has been a "system" team and have had no issue running the football and have been run dominated the past few years. Just because you are a system team doesn't mean you can run the ball very well and have the ability to throw.

We can all name certain instances, however, ones that come to my recent mind that is much less than 10 years ago is Lone Oak this year, they fumbled some snaps and couldn't get under center in the state game and had no run game to wind the clock down, they lost because of this IMO.

 

Russell beating Owensboro Catholic where Russell threw the ball 0 times and Catholic ran it 0 times.

 

Russell and Mercer County in the State Championship game and both were run, run and more run.

 

Belfry beating E-Town where Belfry won by not throwing any and E-town lost by not running it any.

 

 

You also cannot compare NFL to high school because there is too much variety in high school and none in the NFL.

I don't think anyone will argue that an NFL team could win by running the ball all the time, because they couldn't.

There isn't a college team that can win it all by doing it either. That is running it 95% of the time. There as to variety at those levels, however, high school has proved itself that the run game is very much a huge factor.

 

Running teams can thrive every bit as much as passing teams can. I cannot think of a team that has ever won it by throwing the ball 95% or more of the time. However, I can name schools who run it more than 95% or more of the time. Control the clock and have a great defense, you can win a lot of games.
