I must have been watching a different halftime show or else my standards are much lower because I thought they were great. Not great for 65, just great period. I've always been a big Who fan and thought Daltry sounded pretty darn good. My son has 15-20 boys over right now and even they thought they were "pretty decent" (which I'm assuming meant "very good" but weren't going to say it knowing it was a band from my heyday).

 

BTW, was the drummer the guy from Spinal Tap?

That's probably how I would describe it. They made some mistakes but it was good overall. But, half the band has died, it's not really the Who anymore. The Super Bowl needs to invite some younger artists.

A lot of people seriously don't know much about what goes into making music. The Who is one of the greatest bands of all time, and if it wasn't for acts like them, the Stones, Cream, Beatles etc. coming out of Britain in the late 60's, you wouldn't have a lot of the music you have today.

 

Another thing that The Who is known for is their amazing live performances, and regardless if you liked the halftime show or not, The Who will always be one of the best live acts of all time. They were the first band to really make instrument destruction a part of a live act, and influenced many performers when it came to playing live shows. The main thing to know, whether it being The Who, or any band, it takes a good band to sound good live. Especially in front of that many people and that kind of set-up. There is a lot of people out there who expect to hear the same music they hear on their cd's or mp3's when they listen to a band live, and thats not the case at all. Some bands are better live than in studio, most are not, however, live music is something special.

 

One thing you have to ponder, whether you liked it or not is this. Pete Townsend (guitarist/backing vocals) and Roger Daltrey are both pushing 70. Who knows how often they still play, and no that wasn't a pun. For the past five years or so they have been basically only playing one off gigs meaning they only play a handful of shows a year, and they're spread out. So you take into account the age factor, how often they now play live, the set-up, the circumstances, then you have good reason for not sounding as good as some people think you should have sounded.

 

 

 

 

 

 

On a side note, I liked this Halftime performance but it wasn't no where near as good as Tom Petty was a couple years ago. I would much rather see acts like TP and The Who as to some of the acts that normally take the stage.

I thought it was a valiant effort by two guys in their mid 60's. Daltrey was loud and sounded pretty good IMO. I am easily impressed when it comes to classic rock like that. All the youngins out there have no clue about the history of The Who and how they did lay the foundation along with Zeppelin for other Rock Bands of the 80's and 90's.

 

My teenage son im sure was impressed with We dont get fooled again, since CSI Miami is his favorite show. LOL

I don't really cut them slack for that considering that's the only reason they're there in the first place and not Beyonce or Rihanna...

 

It was an alright performance... The stage show/lights probably saved it. I think they probably had a bad audio feed in their ears, because both Daltrey and Townshend were off with their vocals at times.

 

It could've been worse, it could've been better. I wish Townshend would've smashed his guitar.

This is what I wrote for my blog to recap the performance...

 

I'd like to take this opportunity before the start of the 3rd quarter of a thus far slightly boring Super Bowl to say this: The NFL needs new halftime acts for the Super Bowl.

 

Don't get me wrong... I love The Rolling Stones, Paul McCartney, Bruce Springsteen, and Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers. I'm not a fan of Prince, but he's tolerable. And I also love The Who. But guess what? That's the last six Super Bowl halftime shows. Process that for a moment... Those weren't the halftime shows in 1980. They were the halftime shows between 2005 and 2010!

 

For those of you who do not know, from the mid 1960s throughout the 1970s, The Who was one of the most groundbreaking bands going. They aren't just "Those guys that play the CSI theme song!".. They gave birth to the rock opera, and are the reason that bands smash their instruments today. They gave us such rock staples as "Pinball Wizard", "Baba O'Riley", "Squeeze Box", "Won't Get Fooled Again", "Who Are You?", "Behind Blue Eyes", "I Can't Explain".... *catches breath* OK, I'm good... "My Generation", "Love Reign O'er Me", "The Seeker", "Magic Bus", "I Can See For Miles", and many, many more.

 

But what I saw tonight was not The Who that I know and love. It was a group of older men who were a shell of what they once were. I honestly feel that they -- more than any of the other acts that I mentioned earlier -- really just don't have it anymore. That was a sad image for me to have in my head of one of my all time favorite bands, and it's really disheartening.

 

I wish that CBS and the NFL would get over the great Janet Jackson debacle of 2004 and get back to letting current performers play the halftime show again. At least I didn't feel like they're bringing dinosaurs back to the forefront back in those days. But no doubt, next year they'll have KISS, Queen, or Lynyrd Skynyrd... And I'll just shake my head in disappointment and move on with my life.

Todays so-called pop music stinks especially the female artist and before anyone says its an age thing you are wrong.
