January 31, 201016 yr I disagree with the sentiment that you and LCPats have offered. Why in the hell would Willard leave the situation he was in if there weren't some promises made? I think he will be head coach, and I would welcome it because I think he's an excellent coach -- and one who is much better than Pitino, who consistently has shown his weakness in close games during the UofL tenure. He was able to mask that inability at UK because he almost always had superior talent to throw at coaches who killed him on the X/O end. Because he is making more as an assistant at UofL than a Head Coach at Holy Cross. You think Willard is a better coach than Pitino, that's comical. Pitino is the only coach to ever take 3 teams to the final four. And it's not all about talent. Providence had no talent, the 2005 UofL team had one NBA player.
January 31, 201016 yr In regards to the Seton Hall game, it was a procedural error, per Big East office, by Tony Greene. He blew an inadvertent whistle and should have just reset the ball O/B but just told the kid to take it? The ending was crazy but you cant take quick shots up 3 possessions late in the game. I agree, UofL blew it. But the refs certainly didn't help. As for Seton Hall, I'm not talking about the whistle. I'm talking about them being able to run the baseline after Swop tipped the ball after that play. Should of been a dead ball inbounds and Greene allowed him to run. It doesn't matter, UofL has had their chances to put these teams away and they haven't done it. End of story.
January 31, 201016 yr There's no reason UL shouldn't be #2 or #3 in the Big East right now... It is shocking they are in 7th place 1 spot behind UC. UConn is tied for 11th. Tough league.
January 31, 201016 yr I would agree with him retiring, if it weren't for the new arena and the 2011 class he had verbally comitted. But you never know, he doesn't have the fire he once had. He ain't getting any younger... I chuckled a little bit at this line after Ricky's off season escapade.

January 31, 201016 yr Surprised again in Pitino, he didn't seem to have a plan for the 1-3-1 that WVU threw at them late and what seemed to have turned the game, he can't seem to help get them over the hump.

First time I've ever heard a UL fan make that statement. I too think Willard would be an upgrade. I don't think Pitno is a good x/o coach, but he obviously has done something right in his career. Aside from a 3 year stretch at UK he has not had superior talent and is going to be a HOF'er. Most UofL fans don't think he's a great x/o guy, especially to old school fans who compare him to Crum. Crum was a much better in game coach. As for the "back-up QB" syndrome (saying Willard would be an upgrade). He has his chance at a big program. He was 20 games under .500 at Pitt. If Pitino retires, UofL will go after a bigger name IMO. Willard has had a lot of medical problems too, that was another factor in him probably wanting to step away. All that being said, he would be the interim coach if something happen.
January 31, 201016 yr Author Isn't Ralph Willard around 65 or so? I would think Louisville would go with someone that would be there for a while, instead of promoting from within w/ Willard. If Pitino were to suddenly resign (which I don't see happening), I'm sure they'd be content with throwing the interim tag on Coach Willard... But beyond being the guy to finish out the rest of the season for them, I don't think he's your guy.
January 31, 201016 yr As hysterical as a funeral. You're just too close to the glimmer of Rick to be able to assess him honestly. Great recruiter, OK coach. Struggles in close games, but looks fantastic when he has superior talent. He's basically Lute Olson, or a glorified Bill Frieder or Lou Henson. Believe me there is no glimmer in my eyes towards Rick Pitino. But he is the only coach to take three programs to the Final Four, all with the work he did. No coat tails to ride off.

He said he got a bogus explanation on that last call...video He also said that the ball went off Mazzula on the other end with 19 seconds left. He's right about that too. Mazzula was tripped by the UL kid which led to him fumbling ball off his head. Even it if it is incidental, if it leads to a turnover you have to call a foul. So that one sort of averaged out...no foul call, WV keeps possession.

February 1, 201016 yr :thumb:s So they basically got together then, and said "Since none of saw what happened, we better give this ball to WVU, or we'll going to have a riot on our hand" when the correct call would have been a jump ball. Went something like that.
