Would you take Orlando Cabrera's offensive upgrade over Janish, or is he too big of a liability as a SS now? Or would you forget both, and give Todd Frazier a shot?

I would be very happy if we could get Orlando Cabrera in here somehow. I think he would easily be the best all around option.

I'd like to get the OC if the price was right. If not, I'll take Janish and his defense.

Give it to Janish, he will save a bunch of runs with his defense. He did hit 21 doubles and had an OBP of .296 will do fine hitting 8th.

I'd prefer not to see my SS hitting 8th. I'll give up some defense in exchange for a little extra offense. I always heard what a horrible liability Keppy was at SS and never really saw it. Wasn't going to make anyone forget Ozzie, but not like he was a complete turd either. Janish is simply not MLB starting shortstop material. At least not for a team that wants to seriously compete for a title.

I don't know anything about Frazier's SS ability, but I would love if he could play there.

I'm for Cabrera if his price is reasonable. If he wants Willy Taveras money I say pass. Janish may not produce many runs but his "D" might save some as well.

 

The Big Red Machine had Geronimo in centerfield. He didn't produce much offense but he sure could patrol anywhere between 375 sign in left and the 375 sign in right.

 

And no I don't think this is the next edition of the Big Red Machine.

I hate to beat a dead horse, BUT:

 

I wish we would have let Janish play an entire season last year. Instead, we're faced with a bunch of guys who probably can't cut it for a full year, but we're not entirely sure what they have to offer.

 

My two cents:

 

Janish is going to be the starting shortstop. Cabrera is too expensive and doesn't offer too much more than our other options. Let Janish, Sutton & Frazier compete for the starting SS job.

 

Our best bet would have been to move Phillips to SS and pursue either Orlando Hudson (who would be too expensive) or have Frazier play 2nd.

 

As it is now, Janish will be the starting SS.

 

While we're talking potential FA's....I'd much rather pursue Johnny Damon than Orlando Cabrera.

 

Also, a name to keep an eye on is Alfredo Amezega.

Cabrera would probably be an upgrade. My fear is that Dusty will hit Janish 2nd. If that's the case, we HAVE to have someone else. If he's going to hit 7th or 8th, then I can live with that.

 

If I had my pick, I'd probably go after Amezega. Unless Cabrera is under $3 million (or so).

If this were 1975, then Janish would be a perfectly logical pick. There was more than enough offense elsewhere to compensate for Geronimo and Concepcion.

 

Unfortunately, the 2010 Reds don't have that. Sure, if Rolen is healthy, Bruce bounces back, and BP and Votto have solid years, that's a start...but IMO, there's too many questions with what production we may get from left, center and catcher. You couple those with shortstop, and that's half of your regular starting lineup! :scared:

I don't think catcher is at issue. Hernandez & Hanigan are not great, but they're decent. Hernandez should hit 6th or 7th. Hanigan could hit in the 2 hole (rarely) or in the 7th / 8th spot.

3. Votto - 1B

4. Rolen - 3B

5. Phillips - 2B

6. Bruce - RF

7. Hernandez - C

8. Janish - SS

 

That probably won't be the lineup, because Dusty will split up the LH & RH, but that's what I would go with as of today.

 

I hope the Reds can re-sign Gomes for a low price. He had a great year last year and would be a great bat off the bench & occasional starter in LF.
