^Down to Reds and Rockies.

Aren't the Rockies set at SS and 2B with Tulowitzki and Barmes?

I'd like to see them give OC a one year contract. He is a good run producing short stop that can steal a bag. Keep Janish as the late inning defensive sub, that's pretty solid.

If I were to guess Cabrera will sign with the Reds since he'll play SS there. In Colorado he'll play 2B.

Barmes has a fine glove, but the Rockies need an offensive upgrade there.

It looks like the Reds are going to sign Cabrera instead of Damon.

I think they'd be a lot better off signing Damon. Damon hit .282 last year with 24 HR in the AL. He'd be a top 2-3 hitter on our team.

It's tougher to find an offensive upgrade at SS, but the reports I've read say that Cabrera's defense has notably slipped in the last year or two.

I suspect that Damon's price tag is still a bit high for the Reds' taste.

The only knock on Frazier that I have heard / read is that people think he's too big to play shortstop. It had nothing to do with his ability to actually play the position.

Then you only read the report on minorleagueball.com......Which is mainly written by fans. If he doesn't have the footwork to play second base, which almost all scouts agree on, then he's not playing shortstop in the big leagues. Honestly, he's a nice looking young player but he's not a huge difference maker wherever he plays. He's probably not a .300 hitter, he's probably not a 20 homer guy, he's probably not a 100 RBI guy. He reminds me of a Bill Mueller type player.....Solid major leaguer but a supporting cast type player. That's the reason that Francisco, with his raw power but horrible plate discipline, (72 walks--55 non-intentional, in 1892 plate appearances) has the inside track at 3B for now. Of course if Francisco ends up playing LF you might see them both starting.

Agreed on all fronts. :thumb:

I think its more about money than anything and I wonder if Damon even wants to come here. He wants a multi-year deal. At his age I don't think it would be worth it. He had crazy protection in that lineup to get that production, it won't be like that here.

Those 24 Homers tied a career high. He also hit 14 of them early in the season when the ball was flying out of new Yankee Stadium to right and right centerfield. He also was nestled in the middle of Jeter, A-Roid and Teixeira. Plus he throws like a first grader in the outfield. The problem that most of you Reds fans has is that you look at an aging player or a flawed player and immediately project their career high numbers into your lineup. Damon is 36, he's hit over 20 homers 3 times in his career. He's driven in over 82 runs (last years total) twice, he's hit more than 36 doubles (last years totals) twice. He's not got any upside--he's not likely to duplicate those numbersin the Reds offensively challenged lineup. They would be much better off to sign Cabrera, who is also fading but is cheaper.....He wouldn't be a big dropoff from Janish defensively and is still an offensive upgrade. Last year the Reds mishmash in LF hit .240 with 24 HRs and 71 RBIs and had 81 RS. Compare that to the shortstop position which hit .229 with 6 HRs and 52 RBIs and had 76 RS--with an OB% of .294. Orlando Cabrera hit .284 with 9 HRs and 77 RBIs, he scored 83 Runs while playing most of the year in Oakland's huge stadium. He'll also cost less--who is the better buy?

I have not projected Damon's career stats into the Reds lineup, I simply stated his #'s last season. Anything over 15 HR would be a HUGE bonus with Damon.

Johnny Damon's home run power does not entice me. It's his career OBP% of .355. The Reds need some serious help at the top of their order. Damon's defensive ability leaves a lot to be desired, but the Reds are strong everywhere else.

Strong? How do you figure? Left Field, Center Field, Shortstop and Catcher are very much below average. Right Field isn't much better. The Reds are not a good offensive ballclub by any stretch of the imagination. Besides, if it was his OBP % that enticed you why did you focus on his HRs?

I think he was referring to the Reds' defense ...

I realize his average and OBP weren't very good, but he hit over 20 HR, and close to 75 RBI's. Will Cabrera be that much of an upgrade to where it's worth spending the extra money on him?
