VOR: Since I respect your opinion, why do you have Listerman so high?

 

I think you have to look at the guy's track record and it is hard to argue with success. He does have a couple regional titles. Look at what he is doing with this year's team. He is molding a group with a lot of parts missing into a solid team with the potential to upset anyone on any night. I rank Listerman that high for the same reason I include Faust in my top 5. When you have a long track record of success, you have to recognize it.

As to the Listerman and McQueary votes, I guess I shouldn't be surprised that their totals are low. The poll has only been up one day so maybe these early totals will change. But the reason I say I shouldn't be surprised is a topic I was thinking about discussing in another thread. That topic is "which coaches are under appreciated by their own 'fans' ". I think Listerman and McQueary would probably top the list in that category. It just seems to me like there are more than a few "fans" in those two programs who question and even bad mouth those two coaches and there aren't enough fans that step up and defend those two coaches. And that is probably part of the reason why they aren't getting more support in this poll.

What would you consider Simon Kenton (15.8 miles south of downtown Cincinnati,OH), Central KY?? :ohbrother::ohbrother:

 

I was being sarcastic. I think a lot of 8th region teams ( Simon Kenton, Walton, Grant, Williamstown, Gallatin, ect.) are and should be considered into the N. Ky. area. It annoys me to hear otherwise.

I don't think anyone is saying these schools aren't in NKY. But I do think that there is a smaller population of fans from those schools and those areas on this site.

 

Also I think that they coach that are mentioned are good ones, especially Jones of Gallitin Co. But I don't think they are in the same class with the top vote getters on this list. Which of those coaches have a won a regional championship?

In making an honest evaluation of who the best coaches are in NoKy, rather than just vote for your favorite coach, or the coach who wins the most games, maybe the question should be asked, "How would your favorite coach do if he coached at a different school?"

 

I.e., How would Brad Carr or Mike Code do if he coached at Holmes, or CovCath, or at St. Henry, or how would Mike Listerman or McQuery do at St. Henry or Brossart or Holmes? How would Dave Henley or Mike Flynn do at Boone or Brossart or St. Henry?

 

In other words, who does more with less, and who does less with more???

If you ask yourself these questions you might come out with a better, clearer, picture of who the top coaches are in NoKy, rather than just basing your opinions on overall percevied success/failure.

I agree with Mustang. Personally, I feel its too hard to say who is the best coach in Nky. There are quite a few very good coaches who work their tails off. The coaches who do more with less are normally your smaller schools. Coach Code and Faust would be at the top of my list in that category.

A few years ago he was very highly regarded and most of the votes had him & Faust as the top 2 coaches.

Although I agree with you, the problem with that logic is that it's far too arbitrary.

 

I'd guess that very few of the voters have actually played for any of the coaches. The handful who have played for anyone on the list have most likely only played for one, maybe two.

 

To me, that's the best & most accurate way to gauge someone's coaching ability. I like the idea of putting another coach at another school, but there are too many variables involved.

 

My biggest problem with these types of threads is how many votes go towards the guy who has won the most recently. It seems that we have this thread every year. A few years ago, Mike Listerman was the #1 coach in the region. Now that Holmes won a state title, Henley is the best coach. Dave Faust has always been in the mix, but he had additional support in '03 when his team won the region.

FWIW, my #1 coach would be Henley, and not because he won a state title. He deals with a ton of off the court issues and has always been a solid coach. Plus he has the nicest handwriting out of any of them.

Both Coach Jones and Coach Steiner have taken teams in the past 3-4 years to an 8th Region Championship game. Gallatin County was just 10 seconds and a foul away from going to Rupp in 2007-08. Coach Steiner & SK in 05-06.

Well said buttels. GC should of went to Rupp that year but were cheated IMO. I think Jones would do even better at a bigger school. He gets the most out of his kids which makes them successful.

IMO I don't think Coach Carr is successful at Holmes. His temperment doesn't fit. I think it takes a special coach to coach there.

That isn't true in this thread. McQueary is probably second only to Henley in wins the past three years and he is getting no support.
