I don't think anyone is saying these schools aren't in NKY. But I do think that there is a smaller population of fans from those schools and those areas on this site.

 

Also I think that they coach that are mentioned are good ones, especially Jones of Gallitin Co. But I don't think they are in the same class with the top vote getters on this list. Which of those coaches have a won a regional championship?

 

It has been awhile for a regional championship for some of the smaller schools that you mentioned but if you gave some of those coaches the talent that some of the others have then it could be a different story. Just to base it on regional championships would leave out a lot of coaches on the list. It's Gallatin County not Gallitin. And yes I bet you would be surprised how many of us proud Gallatin County fans are members of this forum.

That isn't true in this thread. McQueary is probably second only to Henley in wins the past three years and he is getting no support.

 

To follow up on your statement. Here is the coaches/schools with the most wins over the last three years (including this year):

1) Holmes / Dave Henley(83 wins)- Great talent, multiple regional championships, far run at state tournament. Lived up to their hype over the past 3 years.

2) Boone / Greg McQueary (59 wins)- Great talent, size, shooters. Made it to the regional championship last year.

3)Highlands / Schlarmann & Flynn (51 wins)- Very strong talent. Many college ball players (Simpson, McGraw, and more on current team).

4) Beechwood / Rick Shumate(50 wins)- Have had some good athletes in the past several years, totaling up lots of wins, esspecially against the Div. III schools.

5) Brossart / Mike Code (45 wins)- 2 All A championships, more than just a power house amongst "A" schools. One of the top programs every year in NKY.

6) Campbell / Scott Code (44 wins) -Impressive since they have not been ranked at any time in the top 5 of NKY teams during this stretch but they are almost in the top 5 in total wins.

6) New. Cath. / Grant Brennan (44 wins) - Keeps continuing their success each year, and the torch has been past down over the years.

I feel like we can't talk about "Best Coaches in N.KY" and leave out Mr. Tim Sullivan at Cooper High School. What he is doing out there is impressive and needs to be talked about. I think there has been dramatic improvement in 2yrs at Cooper and I would give Coach Sullivan just a few more years before he has this team competitive in the area.

Observations ...

 

Obviously this makes Code and Brossart look even more impressive. They are last on this list in size and 3rd on the list in wins. Should Code be considered the best coach based on these facts? Clearly there is a strong argument in his favor.

 

I believe some people will be surprised to see Holmes at number 7 in size (tied with Highlands) and Covington Catholic at number 6.

 

If we were to rank the "small schools" by wins over the past five years, it would be Brossart, Beechwood, Newport Central Catholic, Holy Cross and St. Henry. Any surprises in that?

 

IMO the bottom line on size is this. The big schools are going to win about half their games no matter who the coach is based on the numbers and talent they get. But small schools can compete with the big schools if they have a good program and a good coach. In basketball, size of the school is not nearly as big a factor in success as it is in other sports.

I really don't think so. He has done a good job with that Dayton team this year but when talking about the top coaches in the region I don't quite think he is in that company. Not sure when he took over but Dayton hasn't exactly been tearing it up the past few years. 15-11, 11-16, 10-17, and 4-21 in the last 4 seasons. (I can't remember if Dilts was there for the 4-21 season)

 

Dayton has a talented team of seniors this year but not quite ready to crown Dilts as a top coach in NKY. Please don't think I am taking away from what that team or he has accomplished but when talking about the top just don't see it.
