The 35th has won the past 6 region championships. I don't understand how you can say it's been easy to get a win inside that district?

It is easier to advance out of the district in the 35th. It has been a two horse race for years now with an occasional surprise. You never know who is coming out of the 33rd year in and year out.

Changeup might have said it better than I did. Its easier to get wins because there are more teams with less competition. Basically CovCath and Holmes have been the only competition for each other over the past years. While in the 33rd all of these teams have been about the same in competition year in and year out and have made it much harder to get wins in district.

Holmes and CovCath really only lose 1 game in district all year. That being against each other. The same with Highlands and NCC. In the past Dixie has won a bunch of District games also due to a weak district.

Walter don't agree with you often but this time I do.

Look at this water tower in Williamstown, Ky the County seat of Grant County and low and behold it reads

"Gateway to the "Bluegrass"! :idunno:

Does it mean it is part of Central Kentucky better know as the Bluegrass region?

Does the water tower going North read "Gateway to NKy? Meaning we are a part of NKy?

Does it mean that Boone and or Kenton Counties that you have traveled through first along I-75 South after leaving Ohio aren't in the Bluegrass State, but now that you are in Grant County you are in the Bluegrass State?

Just curious what does this Water Tower mean when it states Gateway to the Bluegrass?

Last Time I checked Boone Kenton and Campbell were in the bluegrass region also. I guess you NKY boys didn't know you were in central Kentucky according to theoldguys thinking. The tower in all likelihood is just a friendly reminder to all who travel one of the busiest sections of interstate that they are in the great Commonwealth of Kentucky also known as the Bluegrass State.

I think St. Henry's district was tougher when it also included Simon Kenton. And I would agree that being in a district with 3 or 4 of the largest schools in the region is a challenge. That being said, I think Holy Cross and Beechwood would both trade districts with St. Henry without much hesitation. They will take their chances year in and year out versus Ryle and Conner instead of Holmes and Covington Catholic. Who has the tougher challenge in getting to the regional - Beechwood and Holy Cross or St. Henry?

No doubt they would make the trade. I totally agree. And by when SK was in the 9th the 33rd was brutal and I believe that was partially what made it so hard to just get out of the 9th and then do well down state. Just the toughness of all the districts.

But that was the past. Now St. Henry is in the 34th district and should be getting to the regionals much more often w/ Dixie.

And I don't see HC or Beechwood getting to the Regionals very often when they got to get through CovCath and Holmes.

This is somewhat of a double edged sword though. Sure those smaller schools have had success but 4 of the 5 that you mentioned are private schools and one is an independent.

I don't want to get in to a public/private debate, but IMO, a small private school is going to be able to compete a lot better than a small public school. Why? Because they draw from more than just one area. This is why year after year Newcath, Brossart, St Henry, and Holy Cross have better programs than a team like Silver Grove, Dayton, and Bellevue.

Brossart for example draws from all of Campbell Co, which is one of the biggest counties in the state so are they really at a disadvantage?

Some of the smaller schools also don't play anywhere near the schedule of the bigger schools which is going to lead to more wins. I'm not saying they don't play anyone, but they have a lot more "cupcakes" on their schedule than the so called "big boys."

One coach that is extremely underrated and I'm surprised that nobody has mentioned is Jim Hicks of Conner. Year after year his team takes their lumps during the regular season, but come post season it's like they kick it in another gear. His teams have played spoiler several times over the past few years.

Speaking only of Mike Code's record above--How many of the kids that played on the teams that recorded those 98 victories came from Dayton, Newport, Bellevue, Ft. Thomas, Southgate, etc.?? I can't think of any that didn't come from the Alexandria/Cold Spring area? Most grew up and went to school within 10-12 miles of the school, so the "all of Campbell County, which is one of the largest counties in the state" comment is VERY misleading, especially for those downstate and not that familiar with the area!!

You'll also find their schedule and tourneys competitive with most of the largest schools in the area. They also finished #1 in the final Enquirer and Post polls in two of those years!! All that out of less than 200 boys--Must be some decent coaching going on there!!

I remember when the 33rd had seven teams, it was brutal. IMO I don't see how you can't include Gallatin in the conversation, they are a hop skip and a jump from Boone and Kenton county.

Holy Cross fans would tell you that their "Dream Team" was in 2002 through 2004. Joe Stevie, Bibbins, etc. (I can't think of the other kids name (senior & frosh...his dad is a nurse....right now b/c it's 4:19 a.m.).

Regardless, that was Danny Trame's "dream team" and he failed to even make the region (again). HC claims to be a big boy but they can't compete with the big boys.

Code is numero uno. If you could poll the Coaches in NKY who's team they would least like to play year in and year out, I would bet he gets the vote.

Brannen is underrated in my opinion, they get the most out of what they have down on the hill.

Henley gets it done, but it did not happen right away in 97 when he started, It took a while. Faces a whole different set of headaches to deal with than other guys in NKY but has pretty good talent year in and out.

Hicks does the most he can with what they have at Conner. Kids seem to play hard for him.

Faust is a good man and a good coach.

That is my top 5.

Wrong...... and you don't want to challenge me on something that I did for a living for years and years. :D

Northern Kentucky and that does include Williamstown are in the River Region but then again the good folks in Boone, Kenton and Campbell don't say we are the Gateway to the Bluegrass which is of course the Lexington area. We from NKy are proud of being from our part of the Commonwealth and we don't try to say we are a part of someplace else.

Don't know of a single person from NKy (at least those that were born here) that doesn't say that they are from NKy first, when a person inquirers from where they are from, when they ask. If the person looks puzzled, then and then only then will most from NKy say, Greater Cincinnati and most spit it out begrudgingly.

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/c/cf/Kentucky_Regions.png The last I checked in my 7th grade geography class the link to the map clearly shows the aforementioned Boone, Kenton and Campbell counties in the Bluegrass Region. Also on this map you might notice that Gallatin County is on the banks of the mighty Ohio making it a river county also. When I go away and someone ask me where I'm from I always say NKY. Your Link also has Gallatin in the Same Region as Boone, Kenton and Campbell. I hate to keep going on but geographically speaking Grant may not be on your map but it is much closer to NKY than Central Ky. This is just my take on it right or wrong.

Walter, that my be a perception that is out there, and might be applicable to the other Campbell County Catholic high school, BUT it certainly doesn't, nor has it ever, applied to us (Brossart).

Forever, our kids come from our five district grade schools. At present, all of our players are home grown kids with the exception of Travis and Tanner Norton, who live just on the other side of the Licking River, and as the crow flies, live just a stone's throw from Brossart High School.

Funny but you have to go to Wikimedia to get your information while I went to the Commonwealth of Kentucky official web page. Wanna guess which one is more accurate? http://www.kentuckytourism.com/

Henley/Holmes

Russell/Newport

Listerman/Cov. Cath

Shumate/Beechwood

Faust/St.Henry

That's my Top 5

I just went to the first site the search engine took me to, believe me there were plenty more to back up my stance. You however went to the tourism site is that the best site to back up your argument? No really is it? The Derby Region is also a region on the map you brought up, is that really a region. I am going to have to teach my kids that their dad is clueless all these years I didn't know there was a Derby region. It is funny how when some people are wrong even when their facts are not really facts just a tourism map they try to make themselves look smarter by putting down someone elses information saying it is inferior. This is truly the last I am going to say about this, there are much more important things going on in the universe than to worry about this stuff.

Interesting reading. So from this thread I have determined there is really no way to determine who's the best coach. I find it odd that some that have touted one coach or another in other threads have not mentioned them here. Which makes me believe their oppinions may be based more on personal likes than ability possibly.

Nky is very undefined as to its location. If you take a map and look, Nky should be from Covington to just north of Georgetown, central Ky. should be from Georgetown to around Mt. Vernon, and southern Ky to the Tennessee line. I believe Nky has been defined by the sports media as much as anything. When Pendleton County had their power teams 05, 06. There was little coverage considering how well they were doing, unless they were playing a so called NKY team. So was Buddy Biggs a good coach or did he just have great teams. We will never know, he wasn't from NKY nor was he or his team from Central Ky. Isn't it great, we, the experts on everything, can throw out all of our thoughts on here, or declare, IMO, to most any topic. Have it read and debated by many and correctness only has to lie in our own minds and hearts. I love this place
