^fullcourt...good points in your post but I am going to disagree a little on post season performance. Post season performance can mean different things based on what district you play in. Getting to regional title games or to state is definitely a major accomplishment and is testimony to the coach as well as the players. A coach who gets that far more than once gets even more credibility on judging how good a coach he is. However, districts and getting to the regional are not nearly as significant IMO. In some districts, just getting to the regional means something. In some districts, getting out of district and to the regional doesn't carry nearly as much significance in proving how good a coach you are.

I agree some districts are stronger/weaker than others. I've seen #4 seeds in a district win the district. Good job by the team and coach.

I've seen #1 or #2 seeds lose the first game in districts and dominate throughout the regular season. If this happens, it doesn't matter how many wins a team has. That first loss in districts just ends the season.

Post-season is what every team that plays is working towards. The whole point of the regular season is to perform well in the post-season. Ask any coach what their goal is for their team. If performing well in the post-season is not a coach's goal, I think a school may have the wrong coach.

Over the past 5 years including this year Gallatin is 97-42 with 3 all A championships in that time with 3 regional apperancees with 1 quarterfinal finish and a region runner up. The current team is in the All A finals Saturday night. Coach Jones has well over 200 victories in his tenure at a very small rural school that is not afraid to take on the bigger teams. If that doesn't put him in the discussion nothing does.

Is Gallatin Co really considered NKY though? I don't even think we consider Pendleton Co as a NKY team.

NKY is Boone, Campbell, and Kenton Co's...IMO.

I agree. You have to have post season success to be considered the best coach for sure. My point is just getting to a regional may be a very nice accomplishment for some teams and be much less significant to others who play in a weak district. Winning a regional game is a good benchmark on post season success for me.

Without intending to give a geography lesson, can you locate Gallatin County on a map? Not trying to sound cynical, but I do know several NKY folks that are not aware of were Gallatin County is located. I am of the opinion that is part of NKY.

Walter if you read this whole post you would understand that this is a big state and considering it goes Boone then Gallatin yes I would say Gallatin is Northern Kentucky. From the Gallatin Co. line to the tip of Kenton Co. it is less than 30 miles. Gallatin is right on the river so there is no place to go farther in Kentucky without falling in the river and getting wet. As this post stated earlier geographically speaking Grant and Gallatin are considered NKY just not by the geographically challenged.

1. Let the geography lessons begin.

2. I laugh that the 8 boys at CovCath have a 3.0gpa beacause of Coach Listerman....How bout giving some credit to the boys? They a make the grades not the coach.

3. In my opinion......Wins have nothing to do with what makes a "GREAT High School Coach" But it does help.

4. Jim Hicks is one of my favoirte coaches. I don't always agree with his style and the way he coaches in a game.....but he gets it done. And gets his players better by year end, year after year.

5. I hate to even bring this up, but lets also look at what District each coach is coaching in or has been coaching in. Over the past 10yrs the 33rd District has been the most compeitive. Because of lots of good teams like SK, St Henry, Boone, Ryle, Conner. So the wins haven't been as easy in district as some teams like Dixie, NCC, Highlands, Holmes and CovCath. Those teams are expected to win the district year in year out.

Now some of that has changed since St. Henry and SK have be realigned. Does this makes sense????

Walter don't agree with you often but this time I do.

Look at this water tower in Williamstown, Ky the County seat of Grant County and low and behold it reads

"Gateway to the "Bluegrass"! :idunno:

Does it mean it is part of Central Kentucky better know as the Bluegrass region?

Does the water tower going North read "Gateway to NKy? Meaning we are a part of NKy?

Does it mean that Boone and or Kenton Counties that you have traveled through first along I-75 South after leaving Ohio aren't in the Bluegrass State, but now that you are in Grant County you are in the Bluegrass State?

Just curious what does this Water Tower mean when it states Gateway to the Bluegrass?

armsrace...our brains are on the same page. I just totaled the wins the past 5 years (not including this year) and was getting ready to post when I saw your post above. Good work on that. I am going to list mine by program because a couple of the teams had coaching changes in the past 5 years. Here are the win totals by program for the last 5 years:

1. Holmes - 138

2. Covington Catholic - 100

3. Bishop Brossart - 98

4.(T)Boone County - 91

Beechwood - 91

6.(T) Dixie Heights - 87

Newport Catholic - 87

8. Highlands - 84

9. Scott - 80

10. Holy Cross - 78

11. St. Henry - 75

12. Ryle - 67

13. Conner - 65

First, I should apologize to Ken Chevalier at Dixie. He should have been in the list of top ten coaches in the poll and I did not include him. Shame on the Dixie fans for not taking me to task on that oversight. Or is he another that falls in the Listerman/McQueary underappreciated category?

Second, for those who question and/or have not supported Listerman, I think the 100 wins in the past 5 years should give you pause to rethink your opinion. Ditto that for McQueary and his 91 wins.

Third, a little trivia question for everyone. Four of the above programs have not had a losing season in the past 5 years. Obviously, Holmes is one of them. Who are the other three programs that have not had a losing season in the past 5 years?

How can Hicks be considered a top coach with so few wins? Just making it to regionals does not mean you are a good coach. One or two upset wins does not make a good coach either. It just goes to show that mediocrity is acceptable from one of the largest schools in NKY.

Without intending to give a geography lesson, can you locate Gallatin County on a map? Not trying to sound cynical, but I do know several NKY folks that are not aware of were Gallatin County is located. I am of the opinion that is part of NKY.

I don't need a geography lesson. I'm very aware of where Gallatin Co is in Warsaw.

In terms of Northern Kentucky Athletic Conference, why is Gallatin not included if they are indeed apart of Northern Kentucky? I also don't think the NKAC (Northern Kentucky Coaches Association) includes Gallatin Co either. (I could be wrong about that, but fairly confident they don't since the NKAC doesn't)

While I agree that the young men of CovCath deserves the pat on the back for doing so well in school, it is indeed the teachers who teach and encourage these young men to work and strive for excellence in the classroom and on the hardwood, and yes Coach L is indeed a teacher!

Do you mean competitive amongst themselves or against the rest of the region?

I know he may not be up there with Henley and Listerman etc. but Tom Dilts at Dayton has done a great job down there with the Green Devils.

I think the argument could be made he could crack the top 10.

Coach Dilts does and outstanding job with what he has to work with. I was very, very, impressed when I saw them play in the All-A classic at Newport last year. They were getting beat by 25 pts late in the 4th quarter and he was still up coaching like the game was still on the line. But most of all when he took a player out he told the player what he needed him to do to help the team.

Coach Dilts is not just a coach he's a teacher of the game. Unfortunately we don't have enough of them.

Top ten??? He's in the top 2-3. If he were at a bigger school he would definetly build a powerhouse.

Go watch Dayton play but most of all watch how he handles his players. Hats off to Coach Dilts you're doing an OUTSTANDING job!!!

All you Dayton fans thank the man for what he's doing.

:ylsuper:Rock-On Coach Dilts keep up the great work!:ylsuper: And thanks for all you do for the kids at Dayton High School

I see your point RC and VOR, but over the past 4 or 5 years most of these seniors have been playing varsity or JV basketball as freshmen or 8th graders and taken their lumps. They aren't going to rack up wins doing that. Dilts has taken these players and developed them and fit them into his system.

Isn't that a sign of a good coach, developing talent and molding them to be successful?

Dilts has to deal with a lot of off the court issues that Coach Henley has to deal with as well.

While Dayton is not going to win the state tournament this year or the All A tourney. He's done a heck of a job with the hand that he's dealt and I'll still argue that he deserves to be in the top 10 of area coaches.

:thumb: :thumb: :thumb: ANY DOUBTERS I CHALLENGE YOU TO GO SIT BEHIND THEIR BENCH AND WHAT HIM DO HIS WORK.

Region finals over the past ten years:

99/00: Newcath (36th) v Holmes (35th)

00/01: Conner (33rd) v Highlands (36th)

01/02: Ryle (33rd) v Covcath (35th)

02/03: Simon Kenton (33rd) v St. Henry (33rd)

03/04: Boone Co (33rd) v Covcath (35th)

04/05: Conner (33rd) v Holmes (35th)

05/06: Newcath (36th) v Covcath (35th)

06/07: Covcath (35th) v Holmes (35th)

07/08: Covcath (35th) v Holmes (35th)

08/09: Boone Co (33rd) v Holmes (35th)

Region Champions by district:

33rd: 2 (St Henry 03, Ryle 02)

34th: 0

35th: 6 (Holmes 09, 08, 07, 05 ; Covcath 06, 04)

36th: 2 (Highlands 01; Newcath 00)

The 35th has won the past 6 region championships. I don't understand how you can say it's been easy to get a win inside that district?

It is easier to advance out of the district in the 35th. It has been a two horse race for years now with an occasional surprise. You never know who is coming out of the 33rd year in and year out.
