UK Coaching Situation

Featured Replies

If Brooks is done the best option is for UK to find someone new.

Why do you say that? Why don't you feel that Joker can get the job done? Who do you feel that UK could get that would do a better job than Joker, and what do you base that on?

Here's my question. What do we consider gettting the job done? 3-5 in the SEC and 7-6 overall with a lackluster performance in the Gaylord Bowl?

I've never been in your shoes so I can't comment on what you've seen, or what you've lived. I also believe that there may be a very small percentage of UK fans who fall under the category you are talking about, but as a whole I think you are totally off base. When Tubby was first hired most UK fans loved the hire. He was loved when he was winning. Do you remember the "Tubby, Tubby, Tubby" chant after they won in 98? Like any coach, it comes down to winning, and nothing else. If Joker wins the fans will love him. If he doesn't, they will turn on him. It will have nothing to do with his skin color. I for one hope he is around for many years, and continues to build on what Coach Brooks accomplished.

Bingo.

That's a good question. What is the best SEC record that Brooks has had?

4-4 in 06

How realistic would the expectations be to ask Joker to finish better than that?

If UK does indeed look outside the program for a new coach, there is no doubt that the job now is more appealing than it was when Brooks came. Maybe Barnhart could attract a fairly decent coach, assuming one is available, since the program seems to be on the uptick.

BTW, how many BCS schools (out of a total of 120) will have new head coaches next season----15, 20?

I didn't necessarily consider the bowl performance lackluster. They dominated time of possession, but a couple of costly mistakes were the difference.

I do think they got the job done this year considering the expectations. Most thought it would be a success to get to 6-6.

FWIW, only three teams in the SEC finished with a conference record above .500.

Not very realistic. I've always wondered why UK fans accept such mediocrity as success?

Because for so many years they were far, far below mediocrity.

I don't care how many games you have been to. My family is from EKY and I have lived in Frankfort all of my life and my sister lives in Owensboro. I know and talk to people all over the state of Kentucky. His race has NEVER came up in discussing him or his abilities. All fan bases have a few nuts but your statements and claims are also off the wall and not what most people think. Liking Coach Phillips has nothing to do with it. Get it? I like him as a person and a Coach, but I question if he is the right person to be the next Head Coach.

:thumb: I agree completely. I have never heard an actual UK fan say anything about not liking either because of that either. Most who would be ignorant enough to claim to not like someone because of something like that probably aren't huge UK fans anyway IMO.

It really isn't very hard to understand. It comes down to how the program has done in the past. Making it to four straight bowl games (and winning three), is a huge step up from where the program has been. They are a basketball school in a football conference. I could give a long list of reasons why they won't ever become a "power" in football and it would probably look like excuses to some, but it is the reality of the situation.

I get that. But it seems the current regime has reached a plateau. Is 3-5, with one year of 4-4 every now and then good enough?

I think of it as the program is becoming consistently competitive. The way Brooks and Co. have the program set up they should always challenge for a bowl and be competitive in league play. With a foundation like this I think it makes it possible that UK could eventually have a year or two where they can make a run at a division and possibly conference title. That just can't happen overnight in the SEC IMO, teams are too deep.:thumb:
