I've never heard of June Buchanan, but I'll go out on a limb and say that that they aren't the motivation behind this proposal. As far as your comment about students in need that are talented athletes, I believe that this is the heart of the problem. There is a widespread belief out there that the private schools are offering financial aid on the basis of athletic ability. For the umpteenth time, that type of aid is against the rules and it just doesn't happen. If there is any school out there breaking this rule, turn them in and I will be the first to support severe punishment. At Trinity over forty percent of the students receive financial aid. The amount of aid is determined based on financial forms submitted to an out of state service that does not know the name of the applicant or anything about the applicants athletic ability. That is what the rules require and that is what we do. It is as simple as that.

While Covington Catholic was formed originally in the city of Covington, it has moved to Park Hills . Holy Cross is the ONLY Catholic school that serves the true city of Covington.

 

Well, sounds like they moved to help themselves out so it sounds like they have a better chance of getting more students now. You can't just up and move a public school, you usually just shut it down or consolidate.

Well, if this was just about academics then the issue wouldn't be coming up. If winning the state championship didn't mean anything, then why are the private people so mad?

 

My thought is that it will in fact, hurt their enrollment. Which IMO, deems State Championships irrelevant.

But how could you call yourself "State Champions?"

Just like Highlands, Beechwood, CovCAth do yet, they haven't beat or been competitive with St. X. If Highlands wins the title this year after having been spanked by St. X, will they call themselves state champs???????

Possibly and possibly some students will return to public schools. I still maintain that there are some students that make the choice for private schools because they see that as their BEST chance for athletic success and exposure. Now, the PERCEPTION might be that their public school has a chance, they may save that tuition money they have been shelling out and compete with the public school. REmember 280 schools and only 48 are private. That means there are still 232 public schools and if you win the district/regional/state championship of an organization with 232 members, it will mean something to them, no matter if the private schools are members or not.

I think it is about more than just St. X and T. I think the situation in Lexington put a log on the fire. I think the Rose Hill situation added another. I think the stat in the Herald Leader and linked in another thread that 48 of the 280 schools (17%) are private but have won 41% of the state titles since 1995 stoked the fire even more.

In their class, yes. And rightly so.

So the winner of the public school championship game can call themselves state champs and rightly so. It is simply another division. No different than separating out by class.

I looked up June Buchanan on the 'net. I found their website, and it lists NOTHING about dorms. Further, their total attendence appears to be 1500, in grades K-12. They don't have a football team....and they're right next to Alice Lloyd College, and share alot of resources with them.

It's totally different being put in a class based on your size and winning than kicking somone out and winning. I thought the saying was, "If you can't beat them, join them." It's changing to, "If you can't beat them, kick them out and leave the people that you think you can beat."

Like I said, Magnets are overrated. The difference is boundaries. Male and Butler have no resides area and the ability to to accept any kid in Jefferson County or to reject them. Because they have no home school area they can do that. Other public schools can not reject kids in their home school area.

If this comes to pass, I will guarantee you that there will be a lot of t-shirts sales that state they are the 4A state champs whether they played T and/or X.

Yep, and those numbers are only going to increase until we have total private school dominance in all sports.
