Well they're complaining the private schools can get kids from outside of their districts. All this takes is opening your own district up to accept other kids from out of district. You evidentally can't give private schools boundaries so it seems like the only solution is to remove the boundaries from the public schools.

Open enrollment as such is not a killer. The State of Michigan went to school of choice and even though the school I graduated from is not dominant in any sport, they amazingly have the same number of students as expected. A few students have gone to different schools because of academics and a few for sports, but I think that they are definitely the minority. Should we not have school of choice or open enrollment to prevent those two kids from transferring to another school where they may only get to sit the bench because of the high caliber of the program. Generally, a person is going to go where they can play. You see that all the time in the choice that student-athletes make for their college. They may not go to the college in their home town or state because the coach wants them to play another position or they won't play until their junior year.

 

Bottom line, let there be school of choice. All kids in the district have priority and then open it up if there is room for students outside the district. Other states do it and it works. I think that Kentucky allows a student to attend any school, it is up to the school if they charge tution. But if they do charge tution, they have to charge it to everyone. An athelete doesn't get a "free ride" as far a tution goes. The rule about transferring would still be in effect and would generally govern most of the issue.

So, everyone is supposed to stay static? No improvement for any unless all can do the same? Shouldn't communities do what's best for their kids? If you want the same advantages you have two choices...move where they are available, or make the change happen at your own level.

One major university and a few smaller ones. No interstates, but several state funded parkways. Considering the # of people in those areas, you're not doing too bad!! Unfortunately these type institutions and infrastructure tend to go near the population bases, and there just aren't a lot of people (read votes) in the mountains.

 

Morehead State doesn't qualify - it's more than 75 miles away from it's supposed service area of east kentucky.

Well, I keep hearing all this educational talk which is a fine wall to hide behind, nobody wants to beat on educational opportunities, that is why we have school right? It just seems awfully funny to me that Louisville is the center of the football world. In 2003 you have Trinity vs. St. X, which tells me that Louisville is considered the center of the state to the KHSAA and thus 4A that year revolved around Louisville. You also have the state game in Louisville, humm, why not have it somewhere else year to year, like Western KY univ? IMO it is just some people wanting to own football in Louisville.

Louisville is the center of the football world...the rest of the state is the center of the basketball world. This is crazy! The basketball championship is in Lexington...ALWAYS....Louisville gets the football championship. Guess which one, on average, draws more attendance?

My guess is that football finals are in Louisville for the same reason that basketball is in Lexington - money. I don't think that Louisville gets a disproportionate share of state championship events. The only one is football isn't it? That doesn't seem like so much for the states largest city. Also, what will kicking the privates out of the KHSAA do to move the state finals out of Louisville.

I don't think kicking the privates out of the KHSAA will do anything to moving the finals out of Louisville because you said it, money, something us rural schools don't have much of. Maybe I sound crazy to you people, but the facts are there, I am just stating them.

We have the best facility for football championships

It's bad enough that students in rural Kentucky have to wait for scraps from Frankfort to get better roads and schools. If we have an open enrollment, there will not be local money to help local schools - it will be eaten by urban areas.

 

Give me a break, you have to be kidding me. If anyone gets cheated on school funding it is anywhere but the rural areas of Kentucky. I would like to see a breakdown of how much money goes into the state budget from from each county and how much we get back. In NKY the schools get killed, we give way more than we get back.

I have a family member that worked for a rural school district and currently works for an urban school district in administration. He's stated to me many times that the rural school districts have more money than the urban school districts. I'm not sure if you're talking about private vs rural or what but I imagine he's correct. As Guru stated above, more state money is funneled to the rural schools than the urban schools. :thumb:

What are the facts? Maybe that would be a good place to start. From my point of view, the KHSAA has rules that cover, recruiting, transfers and financial aid. I believe that those rules are fair and reasonable. I also believe that the private schools follow those rules and that if they, or any other school violates those rules the punishment should be swift and severe. Do you disagree with any of that? If so, which part?
