Elliott county coaches may not like to hear this but when middle school coaches play kids three or four year younger over older kids. The result usually is those kids get tired of it and quit. Reap what you sow. Just my take on it. Elliott does has some young talent in the middle school couple of twins again.:scared:

Well in this day and age its not just the mountains who hold back, but everybody. I personally think all the holding back and moving to different schools is crazy. And also am proud of Timmy for staying at EC.

I have found with a lot of kids that get held back there is more than just sports involved. Is it a big reason to get held back? Yes it is. Is it the only reason? I'd say no, not for most kids anyways. I had a family member get held back and he excelled more in athletics and went from a B-C student to an A-B honors student and ended up being an engineer now. I think he made the right choice for him.

I would be willing to bet the ratio of sports-related MS redshirts to academics/other is in the neighborhood of 25:1 if not a lot more.

I would agree but I've seen it a lot for maturity, the kids you should graduate @ 18 or 19.

Yes Timmy did transfer from West when he was a 5th grader because his parents work in Elliott County. He repeated kindergarten, he was in no way held back for athletic reasons.

Before you blow a gasket WJH, read post #17 that CAMEL1 posted, that's what I was saying was so funny! I could care less about him being held back or transferring nor was I criticizing him and where did I say anything about him being held back for athletic reasons? Chill!

Repeating a grade is hardly exclusive to Eastern Kentucky. I realize it is difficult for you to resist taking a shot at UK or Eastern Kentucky but you should research before posting.

I struggle to find instances of students that repeat a grade so as to excel on the chess team. Maybe I'm not looking hard enough.

 

I heard from a friend of a friend that recently saw the EC sixth graders. Said there was one about 6'2" or 6'3". This is thirdhand info, though.
