Repeating a grade is hardly exclusive to Eastern Kentucky. I realize it is difficult for you to resist taking a shot at UK or Eastern Kentucky but you should research before posting.

My understanding is that the group that was comprised of seniors last year all repeated. Maybe not all at the same time.

I think an increase in the number of middle school kids we see being held back (statewide, not just in Eastern KY) could be attributed to the increased emphasis on achievement testing. If I am not mistaken there is another round of important testing in the 7th grade. One more year of instruction goes a long way. The results of such tests can have a great impact on a district and their finances. Lets face it the strongest motivator is the all mighty dollar.

I'm from Kentucky, therefore I'll comment about what I know. I've lived all over this state, and I see the redshirting phenomena go on in Eastern Kentucky moreso than any other area of the state.

 

A few questions about your Indy comment:

 

A) How do you know? Can you provide documentation or a link?

 

B) Why do you care?

If it were being done for actual legitimate education reasons, I wouldn't be so harsh. As I said before, I'm betting the ratio of times it's done for sports reasons as opposed to academic reasons is a minimum of 25:1, and probably a lot higher. Nobody's getting held back to get an extra year of time with the chess club, as someone noted above.

I read your post and it is a contradiction. You criticize Eastern Ky for having a disdain for intelligence and then criticize people from Eastern Ky for holding their kid back and them having an extra year of school. What is it about holding students back that is so bad?

A serious question. What additional learning takes place when repeating the 6th grade?
